IKEA Eco-Car? Furniture Knockoffs, Tyson's Abandoned Mansion and New LA Water Rates
Los Angeles Slinks for 03.24.2009

032409atlaslinks.jpgIKEA Branded Car?: Rumors abound about IKEA possibly releasing an environmentally-friendly coupe/convertible. We'll believe it if the car is started with hex key wrench.

Knock-Off In Style: the site hasn't been updated in awhile, but it's still a fascinating resource for comparing the real thing to the knock-offs, for better or for worse.

The Abandoned Mansion of Mike Tyson: The mansion looks less like a home and more like an extravagant retirement community. Tragic and creepy.

Reduce Your Water Use By June 1st or More: Metblogs LA reports on the the L.A. DWP is implementing “shortage year water rates” (PDF) beginning June 1, 2009, cutting water permitted by 15% before an overage charge is added.

Ugh, don't read the comments on the Mike Tyson link unless you enjoy racism and rape apologists.

Also, that blogger stole the pics from another photographer who has since taken them off his site.

I live in France, have been a professional French-English translator for nearly ten years now, and work in IT, so know what sort of legalese is required for such things -- and I have to say, there isn't anything fake about that Leko site, it really and truly belongs to Ikea. (Yes, I even signed up for the notification email!)

That said, there is *definitely* some subtle humor going on, and what with the popularity of shared transportation here, I'm thinking that "Leko" is going to be some sort of rental car for going to Ikea. Which is precisely one reason I signed up, since I'm a 2 1/2-hour drive from the nearest Ikea and would LOVE to be able to go there cheaply to shop in person, but none of my friends ever have time to share the expense of renting a big enough car! (Renting one on my own would be just as expensive as ordering from their website and paying for shipping.)

fraise: that's a great educated guess. I'd love to see something like that here in the US too! Combine it with an iPhone app that allows you to calculate optimal IKEA car packing configurations and all of our shopping trips would be much more enjoyable:

I say, if we all chip in, we can buy the Tyson estate and use it as an AT Experimental Lab.

Who's with me?

Update (and despite the date, no, this is not an April Fool's joke): the LEKO is indeed real, and is a centralized carpooling application for going to Ikea! Free sign-up and the shared expenses are laid out from the start. Wonderful:
