Regarding the link above to the palm tree article:
I lived in Laguna Beach at a freakish little apartment complex (that looked to be from the 40's) called The Palms, on Cliff Drive. The apartments all faced a central courtyard, open to the street, and with a somewhat obscured view of the ocean and main beach. The general condition of the place when I was there was pretty poor, including the landscaping.... In that courtyard were 6 very tall Mexican Fan Palms, and they were unkempt and ratty. Dead leaves would fall from them frequently, clattering loudly in the courtyard or onto the surrounding decks, depending on the breeze. Santa Ana winds were good times. I was on the patio one night and looked upward, and if the overhang wasn't there, I would have been nailed! And the stems on those leaves...? Serrated like a bread knife. What a way to go....garrotted by a palm leaf! California Noir at its finest.
