What inspired you?

Marcel Wanders always inspires me. This space inspires me. Which is great since I spend my work and live hours here. It is what I always wanted in NYC and could never afford. I've been able to build to may tastes and needs.

The view inspires me. Much of the loft is built around the windows. From the bed I can watch the morning traffic coming over the bridge and ponder my 15 step commute and at night I can literally count stars. And finally, artwork with emotion inspires me.

Design Tip:

Every time one new item comes in one goes out. I have found that low profile furniture that is either elevated or has an airy base raises the ceiling and continues the floor. Chilewich floor mats have changed my life when it comes to keeping up with dog hair and dirt.

i'm not sure if it's the lighting, but i'm having trouble distinguishing some of your pieces. i like the large art above the colorful chair, but some of the walls look cluttered.

love those closets... i've never seen anything like that. where did you get them?

I love how the bed is incorporated into the place. It is a great way to have a separate space for the bed but does not have the bunk bed feel, which I find distracting in most lofts. The clothing storage underneath is awesome. I had really come to terms with my need for a murhpy bed, but now I am having doubts.

I also love the little reading nook. It is an odd-shape (I live in a triangle, I know how difficult this can be), and I think you've done a good job with the layout.

Can you tell me where you got your TV stand?

love the bed/storage solution. floor is lovely. is it cork?

I really want to know about the Chilewich floor mats, as I am in a (losing) battle with animal detritus.....

Is the clothing storage re-purposed kitchen cabinetry? That's brilliant!

It's nice and large feeling. I really like the nook for the computer.

i love this. it has a lot of energy, great light and windows and lively color. love that burnt orange wall. it feels very alive and friendly; has smart, cool design that balances really well with the personal. i'm inspired. thanks.

The computer nook is phenomenal. Love It! And I love the building you're in. Yours is a true loft. Yep, those floors are cork.

Your red wall is awesome! The TV stand is way cool, and I love what you did with your extra corner... that space is like an apartment peninsula. How odd. I really enjoy what you did with it! And yay for a fellow Oregonian!

Yay for Portland apartment dwellers.

I like the layout and the basic color scheme with the cork and the red. And I love the lamps.

But, for my taste, I think there is too much pattern going on. There is a big visual competition between the art and the patterns on the furniture. Or something....

posted by JenPDX on 2006-03-15 11:42:21

lose the art, esp. the bedroom stuff, and repaint the walls.

posted by beeatch on 2006-03-15 11:53:58

I think JenPDX nailed it -- when I focus on any one small area, I really like the place. But as soon as I back off and look at the whole photo, my eye bounces around and I feel nervous and over-stimulated. The visual connection between the bedspread and the fabric over the sofa back is especially bothering me -- I want to feel that the bed area is separate.

The feeling may be totally different in person!

I love the loft area, the pull out hanging space is perfect. The computer nook must offer a great view and great place to work. The orange/green/other chair is a bit loud for my taste, but might get pulled into the design more if you used a similar color scheme on the throw/fabric on the couch. -t

I will try to answer all ?'s.
1. The dresser bed was built from scratch. I drew out the plans and then a cabinet maker made the idea come to life.
2. TV stand came from dania
3. Chilewich rugs are so easy to clean and indestructable. It does encourage fur balls rolling around but I hit them with the dust buster everyday. All I have to do is mop the rugs and all dog dirt is gone--it has changed my life.
4. Yes, I agree that the bed duvet clashes with the sofa but it was a gift form the new boyfriend and he thought matching would be a good idea. It will go in closet as soon as it gets warmer and then back to a neutral color.
5.In life the art works, for me but maybe because it's my art.

Deb, (full of passion and energy)
OH MY WORD, I want your closets!!!!!!
This place is an instant pick me up. (No caffeine needed here) Great job. The coolest use for bed space so far!

i have a feeling this space would wow me if i were there in person. it's so hard to get a really good sense of any home in 5 photos, particularly the numerous details that make it especially interesting.

I believe the tv stand is from BO Concept,

i really like the placement of your work area in the window, nice job!

I bet this place is FANTASTIC in person.
I like all the warm wood and that red wall and how the art works in the space. The goofy large pattern chair totally works, which is a surprise.
The bed/cabinet elevated combo is inspired.

I sooooo wish that couch were a different color - what looks like office gray on my monitor is just killing me.
But other than that, great job and congratulations on a great super-livable space.

I love your closets! I was thinking about doing something similar in my NYC apartment- could you tell me how tall your ceiling is? Is there enough head room?

all i can say is: I Want To Live Here.

Yes, there's a lot going on, but there's also a lot of space to move about and weave around to look at everything up close. It seems one would feel warm and protected in here, especially with a view of the bustling grey city outside.

And that bed- it's like a humble king atop a very royal, yet incredibly efficient, throne!

i love it - can you make a duplicate and helicopter it over to manhattan?

posted by miss on 2006-03-16 08:10:35

It's fabulous! The elevated bed space is genius! Love it. I love the art too--there's a lot of color and energy but there are also plenty of spaces in the loft to feel calm and serene. I bet that it would come across even better in person.

Great job. i really like this apartment!

i agree that there are some over the top patterns going on, BUT, what makes it seem more difficult to take in is the fact that you are taking these pictures from far away in an open LOFT. This is not a closet of an apartment in NY where a photo would consist of the composition on a dresser and part of a window....

My favorite part is your painting on the red wall- and i normally hate it when someone decides to accent one wall! It just works for you.

Rita-
My ceilings are crazy tall-16 feet-but it is really 14 clear feet without the beams and sprinkler pipes. Then the air duct pipes drop below that. I ended the bed just before those so I would be able to stand. The area that the bed sits on--my throne--is 52" off the ground giving me tons of clearance to do whatever. I have so much storage. The two closet drawers are 6 feet long each. And on the bottom is a ledge for all my shoes. As a note, the dogs love it also, they think that it is the largest dog bed ever made. Which keeps them off my furniture.

This is a great art space and home. I would've liked to see new boyfriend's face when he saw the loft. Lucky guy.

What is one the wall behind the reading nook?

And I can't see the bridge out the window. Am I missing it?

posted by pbphoenix on 2006-03-16 13:29:13

"on" the wall

and maybe that is the bridge very close up?

I like the art and the space and the duvet. The couch, duvet, and biggest piece of art are referential without being overpowering.

posted by ebrown on 2006-03-16 18:53:03

And can we make it a rule that entrants have to list the colors they used?

posted by ebrown on 2006-03-16 18:54:06

I like the couch. It's from DWR and you can different pieces of fabric to attach with the buttons on couch. Also love the airy feel. It feels warm, lived in and has a thought out design but is not over designed. I too have Chiliwich and love them. Is that vase Sophie Cook from England?

posted by Susan on 2006-03-16 21:37:34

I love your home, Deb! It's efficient, beautiful and you've designed a bedroom that both separates the space and provides tons of storage. The wood, colors of the walls and your paintings bring an organic feeling to the space while the couch and duvet, that incredible chair, the diningroom pieces and the collage of art on the wall near the reading nook bring a real modern feel to the space. I could work at your office window for hours and that raised bedroom - very romantic and luxurious!

LOVE the space! WANT the closets!

Good to know that your priorities are straight here. :-) I saw the cutie in the window right away, but just now noticed the sneaky one...hiding behind the table, I think? As if I didn't love this apartment enough already!

Great loft. Where is this in Portland? Looks like the Pearl. Love the colors and that bed. If you ever dump the boyfriend let me know-I would be glad to move in:)

I think the best aspects of your design are the combinations of clean monder pieces and clean natural wood accents all highlighted with wonderful punches of eye catching color.

Deb, would you be willing to share how you built the closet space underneath your bed? It's awesome and it's exaclty what I want to add to our place.

Thanks
