apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

# 14: Nick's Sweet, Small, Seattle Space

Name: Nick
Location: Seattle, WA
Size: 521 S/F Studio Apartment

Favorite resource:

Ikea, Target, Crate and Barrel.

What inspired you?

The building I live in is a newer modern urban city dwelling that has great lines and color. I love the challenge of a small space, and this one had a great layout that worked with stuff I already had.

Design Tip:

Learn to live with only the things you need, and love. If
I don't love something, it's not in my space. Less clutter in a small
space is key, it gives you the feeling of having more space than you
do. Everything should have it's place.

Is that the Pacific bed from Crate and Barrel in maple? If so, does your sidetable (Ikea, I presume) which I believe is birch look good together? I am having trouble figuring out if birch and maple work well together.

Nice job on the bathroom. He did the right things to make a generic space look more upscale.

The worst thing about open kitchens is ambient ceiling light that generalizes everything and is too bright for the adjacent living space. The undercabinet lighting and table lamp on the counter are more specific and more interesting.

Love the color in the bathroom--please inform!

Are you tall? Your art is hung rather high...

Good bathroom and nice dispersion of lamps throughout the space to make things warm and glowy.

Very tasteful, very efficient, warm and inviting.

Your space looks HUGE! Nice work. Good placement. Although I agree that the two small pictures in the bedroom should be lowers as well as the small painting btw. the two windows.

very nice. What color paint did you use in the bathroom? I really like it and would use it in my bathroom.

Hi, this is my space. Yes that bed is Crate and Barrel and sidetables Ikea. I think they go together well. The tops of the sidetables are a blue/grey color which I like a lot.

The paint color in the bathroom I was told is a Sherwin Williams brand called Night Magic #1201 the sheen is an eggshell.

A friend said artwork hung a little high gives an illusion of more space as well. I like it!

Thanks for the comments!

Your friend was wrong. Of course, if you limit your friends to those 6'3" or more then it probably works (if they never sit down).

Nice place! I love the shelf in the kitchen on the far right and the bed is very cool. That is one of the coolest bathrooms I've seen both the color, the shower curtain and the art above the sink. I also like the painting above the tv and the rug. Really nice!

Really nice and practical. Looks real and "lived-in", but tidy at the same time. I recognize the shower curtains from Target - I had them in my old place. ;)

Though the apartment does look comfy, I don't see a lot of unusual touches. Perhaps they show up in details we don't see in the above pics.

I agree with other comments that the bathroom seems to display the freshest use of color/most originality.

Given the layout, I think you have lots of opportunities to experiment with accent walls. For instance, what would a splash of color do on the base of the bar? Or just to see a bit of vibrant color in the few exposed areas of the back kitchen wall.

One other thing that could look nice in this space (my opinion of course) would be some hanging lamps. You are a fan of IKEA which has lots of very simple metal shade lamps. Hang one from the ceiling low over a side table/cupboard and use a silvered bulb so that you don't get direct light. I think you'd like the effect.

Can you please tell me the name of the beautiful yellow-golden color you used in your main living area? I love it!
