apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

# 17: Diana's Denver Digs

Name: Diana
Location: Denver, CO
Size: 565 Sq/ft Studio

Favorite resource:

Simon Pearce glass: simple, elegant household furnishings made from clear, blown glass.

What inspired you?

The light, open feeling created by the 22 window.

I dont need lots of space, but I do need the feeling of space. And the long window in this apartment does the trick. In addition, clear glass tables and lamps provide functionality without visual mass, while light walls, upholstery, and carpet provide a feeling of openness, and an uncluttered background for notable furniture and art.

Finally, I optimize space by bleeding functional areas into each other (living room and dining room), by applying individual items multiple roles (table+desk+storage), and by resisting the urge to accumulate stuff!

Design Tip:

Glass furnishings provide functionality, style, and modest visual mass.

Although you do not have a separate bedroom, this looks quite spacious.

great windows and great view. i bet it's beautiful when the snow falls.

really like the quilt on your bed. where did you get it?

this space has a lot of potential--I would try playing with colors to define specific functional areas. right now I feel engulfed by a sea of beige.

Denver represent!!!

I love your view. That's not downtown, though is it?

I too wouldn't mind seeing a splash of colour - red or green on the wall separating your kitchen.

However, the glass tables and window to make for an amazing and spacious feel to the room.

Nice separation of the functional areas!

Definately not downtown Denver. Looks to me like either Cherry Creek or Glendale (about 15 minutes south east of downtown).

Colorado is sunny 350+ days a year and quality of light is great (incredible blue skies), so having windows and views are a awesome feature to any home here (and especially a small space).

There's a lot of white and builder's beige going on. It makes it look dated and lacks any focus.
Doing some interior architecture and adding some colors and textures would be big improvement.
There's also no cohesiveness in terms of the furnishings and the art and nick-nacks in the space -- a little editing and thoughtful rearranging would make a big difference.

I like this a lot and anticipate coming back to it. I'd switch out white for wood and move right in.

What lens did you shoot this with? Did you stand on something?

Oh, and what's above the bed?

I think it needs more color. Maybe more black or a larger rug under the coffee table. Otherwise, very livable space.

(People living in the West get to cheat on decor because of our incredible skies.)

The openness in the apartment is appealing, however the eclecticism of the furnishings and art are unsettling and keep this apartment from being a contender in my view.

A little dated, but comfy.

Superb flow - there are long unimpeded sightlines everywhere, perfect multi-use areas, and no blocked walkways. We like the mix of antiques and fine art alongside more contemporary elements - it is much more interesting than one uniform look.
It is also open enough to accept adjustments over time.

I love the overall effect and scale of handsome furnishings. An area rug under dining table would add a splash of color but other than that, it is perfection. Diana, you should be an interior designer!

You've done a wonderful job with a small space. I love it, and could move in tomorrow.

What an amazing illusion of space, created by clean design and light colors. The pieces of art stand out, museum quality design! Bravo!

You've created a beautiful, soothing home. I bet it's gorgeous at night! The couches are perfect for the space; not too high to compete with the view. And your bedroom space is so tranquil. I'm curious about what's above the bed as well - beautiful!

Awesome design and flow. I'd take this place furnished in a minute. Clearly Diana has a design sense.

Delightful, livable and light! It all looks comfortable and uncluttered, love the antique Windsor chairs and Shaker table with the contemporary furnishings, and green and white quilt starts the green sweep. You've made a wonderful home in a small space. Diana has done it right!

God I miss the views in Colorado! I like choice of the glass dining table and lucite coffee table -- they really do keep the airiness of the apartment. If you are allowed to paint I would condider it because I think you have enough light and neutral furnishings to still keep that airy feel. It doesn't have to be a dark color, either.

posted by Lucy on 2006-03-19 10:35:34

I do very much like the flow but I would partition the bedroom in some way; it's too "out there" for me. The windows are fabulous.

The plexi table is a great choice.

This is definitely a soothing collection of furnishings to be surrounded by, and come home to every night. It would put me in the mood to listen to wonderful music, relax with friends and just chill.

Too much beige!

Well, the window/view is the apartment. The only design element I can applaud are the classic canes dining chairs.

You need some division (and privacy between the living and sleeping spaces. I understand that you wouldn't want to disturb the flow of light from that wall of windows. Instead of a plain desk in the "bedroom", you should consider a 6'-7' high piece, the width of the love seat, with shelving on the living room side (instant library) and a desk with cabinets and shelving on the bedroom side. Instant privacy, and makes the living space more manageable. Or if you have a "thing" about not blocking the light, hang a translucent scrim from wires behind the love seat.
You might want to try the scrim idea for the windows as well-- at least in the "bedroom" (your neighbors are getting quite a show)-- right now it feels like an office that has been converted into anapartment.. Also, consider painting the walls. The light colored carpet and sofa give the room no definition; with the wall of windows you won't have to worry about a loss of light. You may be renting, but you can always paint them white before you move out.

I like it. Not the greatest, but it's ok. I would like to see something separating the living room from the bedroom.

Eclectic mix of New England, folk-art, and urban elegance, this tiny spread gets my vote. Especially like the colors, the interesting mix of elegance and functionality, and the large windows. Gotta love the pure function of the desk!

I can't say I like the furnishings - they really seem to clash. but you have achieved an airy feeling, so bravah on that.

Love the wide expanse of windows, the color scheme, the funky couches, and cool light on the desk. Looks like you have an eye for folk art and the streamlined look of pure elegance.

posted by Hawkeye on 2006-03-31 12:09:18

I agree with Maggie--some slight delineation between "sleeping" and living--and, as she also suggests, a semi-transparent scrim, perhaps in a green metallic sheer or a scrim silkscreened with an interesting graphic, would not interupt the flow and light, but would provide definition and interest. You're on-track about the invisibility of glass furniture...
thanks for sharing!
