apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

# 19: Jed's LA Form and Function

Name: Jed
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Size: 575 Sq/ft 1 Bedroom

Favorite resource:

In a word, Ikea. I'm always amazed at the little things I find there - so inexpensive and well designed - and what a big impact they can have on the overall feel of a room without looking cheap or like it came from Ikea.

What inspired you?

I wanted my space to be warm and functional, yet not feel cluttered. As a writer, I need a separate work space, otherwise papers and scripts quickly cover my entire home. I was able to use a large closet as an office and can simply close the door when I no longer want to think about work. I was also able to create extra storage by pulling the sofa away from the wall and putting a shelf behind it.

Design Tip:

Get a feel for the space before you decide what to put in it, and how to arrange everything. I'm a firm believer that the layout of the space should dictate placement of the furniture.

I'm in love with your table lamp.

Nice! I especially like the photo above the dining room table. You actually inspired me to attempt to do something similar sometime soon!

I like the photo about the dining room table too. It reminded me of something I started working on a few months ago. I went to IKEA and purchased 16 4"x6" white frames. I removed the 'stands' from the backs. I duct taped them all together using clear duct tape. 4 down, 4 across. In each frame, I inserted either a solid color, a nice image from a card that I liked, collaged cards, and mini paintings of mine. It's still laying around awaiting completion, but when it's finished, I'll be sure to post it on my blog if you're interested in seeing it. I'll have it up sometime next month.

Thought I'd share the idea with readers who may want to dublicate something for their space, on a budget. I think all the frames cost around $27 and the duct tape, $4.

I meant *duplicate* with a p.

Although dublicate with a b may someday become a real word. But for now, it's not, so forgive me for the error. :)

Your bed looks great. I'm always surprised at how little care people put into making their beds for photos--why spend all that time and money if you're just going to throw an over-inflated, rumpled duvet on top of the whole thing? But you really show off your bedroom quite well with those tucked-in envelope edges.

Office in the closet! LOVE it! Oh the jokes I could make - but I'm sure you've already heard 'em :)

The truth is, I'd considered doing the same thing so many times while looking for an apartment.

Anyway, kudos to you. Well done.

I love the bedroom too...

I adore the art over the couch. Can you let me know the name of the artist...?

posted by aquarabbit on 2006-03-20 11:51:13

Thanks everyone. I actually got the art above the couch on eBay (I believe he's a teenage graffiti artist living in Chatsworth, OddZoo is his user name). I made the picture above the dining table with a picture of my frined's baby using this awesome, amazing (FREE!) website: http://homokaasu.org/rasterbator/.

That lamp on the console behind your sofa is so amazing.

The brass light is a floor lamp. It was found on the curb waiting to be carted off. $10= polished, sealed, rewired... good as new.

Could you please tell me where you got the picture done that is placed behind the dining room table? :-)

I found them in the alley behind my apartment. I think they're bases to street lamps that sit underground. They're concrete and very heavy, but the holes that allow cables to pass through fit wine bottles perfectly.

Your apt looks spectaclar and finished. You have a great design sense. I'm impressed by your curbside floor lamp find. A friend saw these pictures and actually wrote me about it. She's an interior decorator and thought you should be a designer. Just thought I'd pass on the compliment.

posted by Karen Ivy on 2006-03-21 11:37:16

another spelling error: Meant to write "spectacular". The English major in me couldn't ignore it.

Love it! The space has loads of character with a quirky charm to it. Great balace of color and texture. Efficient use of space without feeling cramped. The closet office space is especially efficient. (My only suggestion would be do amp up the lighting here and either hang some artwork on the wall or paint it another color--so it feels less like a closet or more like a workspace. You could really go wild with this space since you can close it off with the door!)

It's rreally nice, but how do you survive without a basketball rim or backboard? What do you do when the weather isn't nice or when you wake up at 2 am and need to work on your three pointer? Well despite all that it's still a nice job. But you must really be depressed withou haveing a basket or backboard. I guesss you must deal with it by working on yfour dribbeling when you wake up early in the am. You must have very great neighbors. Nice Job!

The whole apt. is beautiful. You created a great space. How long did it take to get it in this shape?

Hi Jed,

great space! How did you put the rasterbated picture together-- frames/duct tape/poster board? I love the way it was put together!

The tiniest bit of disconnect for me between the main living room vibe and the bedroom, which I think can chop up a small space's experience.

Although I'm never opposed to having fun in the living room and gettin' a little more serious in the bedroom... ;)

Chris:

The individual paper tiles are tacked (a dot of glue stick on each corner) to an unpainted 36" x 48" canvas I had lying around that I had been meaning to paint for about two years, but never got to. Instead of mounting on a canvas, I think a piece of plywood would work well and make a cool frameless border. For borderless, I'd go with foam core.

Unless you're going really big or trying for a specific effect, taping each piece of paper directly to the wall makes it tough to play around with the image or make adjustments.

thanks for the suggestons jed! I now feel really inspired to do this!
Artwork is really important in a space, and I just love what've done... and how the cute baby image and the Japanese/manga comic inspired work above your couch.

We're interested in your space & would love to talk to you about our HGTV show, "Small Space, Big Style". Would you be able to email us at smallspaces@brainbox.tv so we can get in touch with you?

thanks!

Sweet Digs!! Your dojo is much cooler than my parents soul food pizzeria. You could pull girls in there even wearing my banana yellow jumpsuit I pimp out before fighting street gangs in ninja-garb. My only suggestion would be to convert your office into something like the uber weapons closet I have in my academy/basement. Where do you keep your nunchuks and Soul-Glo?? Awesome job kid, you are definitely the Master and have "The Glow".

PS Ask Whitey if his clients mind that he interupts them during sob filled accounts of extreme cruelty by clapping his hands for them to feed him the rock?? I'm not quite sure how this works and if there is sufficient room to run a weave given the current office space.

Hey Bruce,

Big fan! I keep most of my weapons (chucks, throwing stars, swords with scarves tied to the handles) behind the sofa, right next to Bruce Lee's belt buckle. I use "The Glow" to keep my plants alive.

Sho'nuff!

Domo Arigato Mr. Roboto....and I'm a big fan of yours as well. Sorting out a joint as nice as yours must have been at least as hard as catching a bullet w/your teeth. Ain't no fortuneless cookies in your dinner. Wouldn't it be cool to have that little Temple of Doom wanna-be kid from my movie there to fetch your slippers and Ramin Noodles (that you bring to the movies)??

I too love the picture on the table, very clever. I also enjoy the position of the chairs on one side of the dining table, wise use of space.

I love your place! If this is a contest not about the space (or lack there of) but how you fill it, then you should definitely win. I think a distinction should be made between homeowners, for whom it makes sense to invest in the actual structure, and renters, for whom it doesn't. Even investing in items you can take with you when you move makes less sense because it might not work in the next space.

Assuming you're a renter (like me), you've done a great job.

I like the idea of the closet as office. I did this for a while in my place in Chicago, but after about 6 months I just felt too cramped. It is very economical and can keep the major spaces less cluttered though.

i love the cloud pillow. it makes me think of a magritte painting. like i'm looking through your apartment, through the couch, through the walls, into the sky beyond.

Beautiful space. I also especially love the table lamp, the cement thingies for the wine, and the art from OddZoo. Too bad there are no items for sale by him on eBay right now. I would have liked to buy some. I can definitely take some design tips from this space right NOW!
