# 21: EW's LA Bungalow

Name: EW
Location: Los Angeles, CA.
Size: 650 Sq/ft Spanish Bungalow

Favorite resource:

I like to combine classic mid-century pieces (vintage Mies van der Rohe Barcelona Chairs, Eames Lounge) with family antique heirlooms (china cabinet) with pieces that I design and build myself (the mirrors, the side table, and the arc lamp).

What inspired you?

As a hotel living enthusiast, I like spaces (W Union Square, Maison 140, Gansevoort NYC) that are are not only modern, but also achieve a welcoming warmth. Memphis Milano, Sotsass, Flos, Saladino, Mies, Terrence Conran, Paris Apartments, my mother’s home in Santa Fe and her sense of style

This is lovely! Every bit of it, just perfect. You guys are seriously making me miss the West coast with these stunning entries. (Well, at least we FINALLY got a Trader Joe's on this coast)

Great place EW. Very stylish yet comfortable. Usually I don't think lamps as being sexy, but where did you get that sexy lamp with the black shade?

Beautiful pieces and aesthetic. It looks similar to the Beverly Hills residence featured on the Turquoise site: http://www.turquoise-la.com/interior/beverlyhills/index.html

Many of the same mirrors, lamps, side tables etc. Any relation?

Love it!

I really love vignette (i am guessing in the entry) with the console. I love it when furniture look like the architecture was altered for them. That table fits perfectly!!! I love it.

Does this fall under 650 square feet? Unless I'm doing my math wrong, this is closer to 700.

posted by pb on 2006-03-20 16:35:38

i love it! i would feel so at home in your home. i think your's is the only entry where i've seen real speakers! are they b&w's? how do you like the sound? they blend nicely with the decor. my biggest design challenge has been trying to blend my giant vintage jbl 120ti's & denon turntable (remember vinyl?) into the living room.

best of luck! you have a lovely home.

Great place! Beautifully decorated and love your furniture choices! I have been looking for a sofa just like that one. Where did you buy it and what brand is it, if you don't mind my asking?

pb, I agree with you about the sf.

Sorry About that! My space is actually under 650 without deducting for walls, etc. I guess I should have been more specific with my measurements! Thanks for all the great comments. Its actually 31'x20.8.

refreshing. so glad that this entry is NOT hyper-modern. (i am so sick of it, btw. does anyone think that EVERYTHING modern is just too easy???)

where did you find that hot hot hot lamp? and the sofa looks like one from williams sonoma home? is that true? and really like the fabric idea with the china cabinet...

my own apartment is entered in this contest, and i am so humbled by some of these entries... thank you for inspiring me so much! beautiful job.

I don't care how big or small it is, when are you going to design my small space? Love it!

Seriously, if you don't win, you're robbed. Yours is by far the coolest. I looked at all the entries and most were crap. Modern to most of these people equals death, overpriced plastic chairs, and boredom. You do modern just right, and your design carries through the whole space. Good luck!!!

Kelly,

What great compliments - I really like your color choices and your bedroom is really warm cozy. I especially like the handles on your dresser.

The lamp in the entry way is from Barney's, but I was lucky enough to get it on sale last year. Its Albrizzi - you might know their acrylic boxes from Jonathan Adler's store.

The couch isn't from Williams Sonoma Home, but from Richter. I think you can get it here:

Richter

I sold my last one - from Pampa - because it wasn't comfortable at all!

Thanks again -

Not really a coincidence - that's my old apartment! You'll notice the Albrizzi lamp, some pieces I made (mirror, lamp, coffee table).

Hanifa, the painting is by an artist named Kathleen Morris:

I absolutely love it too. I am going to steal the idea of the mirrors over the bedside tables, I just think that is so great. One weensy thing though - I just never get blocking windows with things, in this case the tv - but this still gets my vote for best.

posted by patrick (the other one) on 2006-03-21 17:56:31

I like it. The chandelier in the bedroom makes me think of replacing chandelier in my living room. I do agree with clutterfreemiss on the TV and credenza blocking the window. It blocks light and, at least in the picture, make the TV look imposing. Otherwise, it looks great!

posted by Brian on 2006-03-21 19:23:41

This entry -- along with several of the other L.A. entries -- are a real eye opener. We New Yorkers so often think we have a monopoly on designing well for small spaces. But in my opinion, this year's L.A. entries, by and large, put the New Yorkers to shame. Bravo.

posted by mc on 2006-03-22 02:55:34

Is snagging the prize here an inside-job?

Turquoise designed your place, and Vanessa (who runs Turquoise) is an ATLA staffer. It seems a conflict of interest for an ATLA staff member to have designed one of the contest submissions...Is this the reason you didn't list Turquoise as a resource to begin with as Patrick suggested.

Not trying to make waves. Just suggesting the contest should be fair and unbiased.

posted by RB on 2006-03-22 09:45:44

Just so everyone knows and we are all clear, I did not decorate this place EW did.

posted by Turquoise on 2006-03-22 10:22:40

Gang,

JUST TO CLEAR THE AIR...Turquoise actually had nothing to do with this apartment. She didn't design it, she didn't purchase the furniture, art or even advise on it. She did help with my last apartment, but you'll notice that this place is much different.

RB, I would say that you actually are trying to make waves with acusations rather than questions. In fact, you'll find that the furniture is even different - with the exception of the things that I designed.

Sorry folks, no inside jobs here, no scandal...

posted by EW on 2006-03-22 10:39:44

Vanessa/Turquoise--

But a huge amount of furniture and accessories in this space are shown on your website in a portfolio sample of EW's old space, so I'm totally confused on who gets credit for what...was EW's furniture pre-existing in the old space, too?

Also not trying to make waves... just trying to understand how this breaks down, and who "owns" an interior idea when it is A)largely furniture-driven and B) the product of a partnership with a designer who presumably makes much of the furniture selection (even if in concert with client)

posted by patrick (the other one) on 2006-03-22 10:44:19

This is a great design, it's amazing what can be done when we don't rely entirely on a strict diet of catalogue modern furniture and get creative.

As for the non-issue of splitting hairs over who "owns" the design, its as simple as, his name is on the lease, he owns and purchased everything in the apartment and accepted nor used any outside agents in the design.

If you need further clarification you might consider enlisting Congress to assign a special prosecutor so you can feel better about the origins of the entry.

The space is nice, but it's very telling that you listed boutique hotels as a major inspiration.

this doesn't look like a home to me. it doesn't look lived in. i love some of the ideas here (especially the glass case with curtains inside), but i see no personality or character. it just seems copied out of a magazine or showroom floor. which, if you did hire a designer (or got major unpaid input from one), seems like a pretty bad design job -- the best interior design brings out the individuality of the inhabitant rather than just aping something you saw in some "Boutique Hotel Style" Taschen coffee table book.

Lovely home you have! Beautiful blend of furnishings, lighting, objects, art - all thoughtfully brought together. What can you tell me about the lights used on your bedside tables? Thanks.

Finally, a place with some life! The fabric placed behind the glass in the antique curio cabinet is something I never would have thought of. Your place -- even if it is a little bigger than allowed in the contest -- looks both chic and easy to live in. You have art, books, real-life things like t.v and speakers, old and new furnishings, and you've managed to make it all look cohesive. I wouldn't be afraid to plop down on a couch or put something on the tables. Nice to see rooms that aren't "touch-me-not"!

Felix--
Chill. It was conceptual question, not a legal one.

But the use of "outside agents" is precisely the issue, since tons of stuff, even down to nightstands/bed/mirrors/side lamp configuration (with chandelier overhead) is shown here, as EW's entry, and also attributed to an interior designer, on the Turquoise site as part of the portfolio section.

I'm just sayin'.

None of this detracts from it being beautiful.

But if it been listed as a collaboration, or Turquoise had been listed as a resource, I wouldn't be hung up on it still.

I agree with patrick (the other one).

I had saved images from Turquoise's Venice place for inspiration. It looks almost identical to EW's bedroom. I remember it from the Artwork contest and because the cabinet/armoire had molding they put on and cool lucite knobs and a cool red bench.

And I'm i the process of painting my bedroom gray.

I'm not just talking about a similarity in style, which could be dismissed or explained...

I'm talking about EW's former apartment being on the Turquoise site portfolio section, "Beverly Hills Residence" as first noted on this thread by Jessica...

AGAIN, I love this (AND the former residence AND Turquoise'/Vanessa's work). But there is just a weird vibe (to me) on how this is presented.

Coming late to this gorgeous entry-- congrats on the honorable mention. One question: do you know what is under the paint on your fireplace mantelpiece? Any chance that you have Arts and Crafts tiles there? (I can't tell from the photo if they are tile or just scored stucco.) If you think you might, do some testing with paint stripper (I recommend Citri Strip) in an inconspicuous spot, and depending how that looks, do the whole thing. I've seen *incredible* tiled mantels from this era in Pasadena emerge from many layers of obscuring white paint...
