apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#25: Grant's WeHo Charmer

Name: Grant
Location: West Hollywood, CA.
Size: 406 Sq/ft 1 Bedroom

Favorite resource:

The street. I have found a number of really great pieces just sitting at the curb waiting for the garbage collectors to haul them off. It's surprising the things that people throw away. I actually found a Geroge Nelson credenza standing on it's end beside a dumpster, (but since my place is so small, it's at my boyfriend's).

What inspired you?

I find inspiration in books, magazines, and films. I love the apartments in almost every Woody Allen film, "Husbands and Wives" in particular although the lofts in "Deconstructing Harry" and "Melinda and Melinda" are amazing. They are always filled with shelves books and have great lighting.

I love magazines like Living Etc. because they show really great REAL places that aren't all "My decorator found this piece in Morocco."

Design Tip:

Actually I have two. The first is try to keep everything well edited, especially in a small place. Group things by color or theme. That way the eye reads them as a whole, rather than as mismashed clutter. And the second is is patience. It takes time to accumulate all the right pieces and accessories that really reflect a personal style.

Interesting headboard - did you make it yourself? Can you provide some details?

I think this is a very cute and cozy apartment. However, I don't think the homo sapien bookshelf looks too good next to the other cabinet-bookshelf of same height.

I really enjoy the books present in so much of the space. Thank you for the sharing,

I think the key phrase here is "personal style". The space seems to reflect a lot about Grant, which I like. It must be tough to have a great love for books and still live with such a sizable collection in this small space. And judging from his food blog (referenced on threads at The Kitchen site), this apartment's kitchen must be quite the workhorse when it comes to food prep. (I'm assuming this is the same "Grant"...) I can see the Woody Allen film influence here and am totally digging it.

Your apartment looks VERY comfortable, and although I'm a minimalist at heart, I think you've done a great job of organizing it without making it feel cluttered... the only exception to which, I would say, would be the stuff on the refrigerator. Stuff on refrigerators just never photographs well.

I think this apartment is cozy and welcoming. It seems a wonderful use of the space. It seems like a place I would like to be invtied over for a small dinner party or lunch

I love seeing an apartment on here that's not so aggressively minimalist -- at last, someone who has a lot of books! I am always a bit alarmed when I go to someone's house and they don't have any books out. I immediately distrust them.

I think I like it because it sort of feels like the male version of Carrie Bradshaw's apartment on Sex and the City -- full of well-chosen, interesting things

I also covet the lamp in the bedroom.

Mostly love this, but the tower of books makes me nervous. Even a small earthquake would send them flying.

Unfair use of boyfriend's apartment for furniture storage! :0 just kidding. I love your reference to the woody allen movies because I feel the SAME way!

This entry really speaks to me! I love, love, love it! I love the layering of things that are so artfully arranged - it allows you to discover a place slowly since it takes some time to take it all in. I think that's why I don't like minimal - you see everything and then it's all over! You can tell Grant has taken the time to edit and put some thought into his home and his belongings. I have been wondering what to do with the tops of my bookcases and I love his globe collection - I may start one myself! Great place, Grant!

I really like your headboard and bedside lamp. The kitchen and dining area also seem to work very well, organized and efficient looking for the small space. Very liveable. The living room area could use a focal point and a little more cohesion, with the wood paneling, everything else needs to be simplified or else the visual is overwhelming. Overall, I really enjoy that your LA apartment could easily fit in the NY contest - I too dig the Woody Allen / Manhatteny feel of the place.

I like this a lot.

Did anyone see "Open House" last night on Lifetime? (hasten to add I don't usually watch Lifetime)

The character King had a great apartment, not unlike this, I wish we'd seen more of.

Nice mix of modern and traditional furnishings and colors.

I think the place looks extremely cozy and inviting, and the use of the space is fantastic. You've made a small space into one that's really inviting and really shows your personality. I agree with all of the comments that the way the books are incorporated is really artful - it's full and friendly but not cluttered.

I absolutley love this apartment. I could live in this space just how it is and be very happy and comfortable. Your eclectic style is great and the headboard is amazing, please tell us where its from! Great entry!

This space just makes me happy. It has the modern yet comfortable feeling I'm trying for in my own apt. Woody Allen's set decorator would be proud.

great apartment! i love the book tower thing, more info on that would be awesome.

I agree Living etc. rules as a great inspiration for real living and real design!

I love the Cluster of Globes. Where did you get them?

I love the Bedroom and the windows in the kitchen. Nice place!

That headboard is awesome!
Curb finds are the best. My husband once hauled a discarded old fire escape ladder all the way home from the lower East side to 59th street! On the Subway! Who knew it would end up in the San Fernando Valley?!?!

What we wont do for beautiful stuff!

To make 400 sq ft into an inviting, cool, and workable space like this is such an accomplishment. I want to curl up on the sofa and read one of grant's books there on a rainy afternoon. It's so refreshing to see someone with true style rather than duplicating a DWR catalogue like so many of the spaces featured on here.

Very cozy, and a great (and sort of daring, in its own way) mix styles and objects.

Wonder why the "I hate it when everything comes from one place" naysayers haven't endorsed this entry more fervently, since it seems a perfect example of what they clamor for...

Perhaps the photos not doing the place true justice?

And I am a TOTAL sucker for a lamp in a kitchen!

Thanks, p(too)! I was wondering the same thing! How can there not be more postive votes than negative?! It really is the mix here that I think is great. In other stylized settings, I would always be concerned that something I found & loved would not "fit in." Here, I think Grant has created a perfect place to welcome those finds. And he has really used the space well and somehow made everything fit and look great at the same time!

p(too) -- While I'm not energetic enough to do a spreadsheet to prove it, I'm wondering if the "don't buy everything in one place" people are the same people who cry "clutter" if there's more than one object on a surface.

(Or there are only 34 "don't buy everything in one place" people, and they all voted Insta-Finalist.)

I love you already for the number of books in your tiny place.

I also love that this is about the untrendiest of entries. Very little of that DWR stuff. I mean, I find modern stuff aesthetically pleasing and everything, but it doesn't take much imagination and it also leaves spaces very clean and spacious by the nature of its design. You have gone a slightly more challenging route, in my opinion. the place feels warmer, homier, and a lot of the pieces are beautiful in an unusual way.

All I can say is, I get it!

posted by Sera on 2006-03-24 10:15:34

I just wanted to reiterate I love this place, and should I ever become a filmmaker, I will shoot a movie here--or at the very least, have my sets designed like this, because of course my films would be witty comedies in the manner of Woody Allen. I keep coming back to look, because I find it very pleasing...don't know where all the negative votes are coming from? Grant, have you ticked a lot of people off in your life? :)

posted by Christine (the one in DC) on 2006-03-24 10:16:07

I love the first photograph - the modern yellow chair with the barrister bookcase, modern bookcase, and the collection of objects on the mission desk all go very nicely together. I'm fond of mission furniture, so I'm especially appreciative of how well it's been put together with more modern pieces here.

The second photograph of the living room seems less well put together. The storage unit is a not as beautiful a piece of furniture to work with, but maybe colorful paper that goes with the pillow and the art could be put inside the glass to obscure the stored objects? Could the ornate mirror be moved from its spot and the colorful painting put there instead?

The bedroom photo is more like the first picture of the living room - the colors in the lamp go really well with the head board and the pillow cases (although the overall effect would be even better with a colored duvet cover rather than a white comforter)

There's so much potential here, but maybe the negative votes have to do with not quite fully realizing that potential yet....

This just looks so comfy and cozy. It doesn't look like it's from a magazine, which is a good thing...it looks real.

You have some really gorgeous pieces! But as a whole the apartment is not put together.

Your place is underrated vote-wise. It looks real and stylish with lots of books and little pops of color.
