apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#26: Alice and Patrick’s Venice Beach Pad

Name: Patrick and Alice
Location: Venice Beach, CA
Size: 325 Sq/ft 1 Bedroom

Favorite resource:

Craig’s List, companies that liquidate office and/or restaurant furniture, our design-nut friends… the MoMA… the River…

What inspired you?

The apartment is inspired by Patrick’s love of modernism and Alice’s affinity for the shabby-chic aesthetic she grew up with. We collected the furniture piece by piece until the apartment felt right. And every piece was a terrific bargain.

The living room seating maximizes the visual appeal of the hardwood floors. This makes the apartment feel bigger and the warmth of the wood is a nice contrast to the chrome.

The sofa compact was rescued via Craig’s list and is a great way to fit a six-foot sofa in a small space. The large, distressed mirror was already mounted to the carriage house door and saved just before demolition. We learned that books take up a lot of space but not as much as bookcases so we installed bookshelves cut from an awesome single sheet of 1-inch thick 17 layer plywood (cheap). The “no lifeguard on duty” sign was also saved from a dock about to be renovated… we like the distressed look… and the metaphor.

The old (1967) pull-down world-map provides a splash of colors in the way only super-toxic now outlawed paint can.

The desk in the bedroom is an old kitchen table. It is bombproof (it gets the most use), providing maximum space without the bulk of a normal desk. Patrick made the bed from scratch. The two 4x12 supports are inset to provide space alongside (for shoes, etc.) and storage in the center. The “bedside table” is simply an extension of the bamboo on which the mattress rests.

Design Tip:

How big a space IS isn’t as important as how big a space FEELS… The more floor space you can see the larger a room will feel. Maximize vertical space. Lounge seating 15 inches off the floor and dining seating at 30 inches…

I love the first picture and the homemade bed and side table. The other pictures leave a bit to be disred. The mid-century modern furniture is gorgeous and well done in the first photo, but then overdone in my opinion with the wire stools. Great furniture and book shelves in first photo though, I love that couch!

I don't get how you use the bedside lamp since it's below the level of your mattress.

Now I know why a guy who works in tv doesn't have one in his place...

That 'rescued' sign from the Main Dock?

Nice place guys

That bed is awesome! Can you tell us how you made it? Please?

I love this place. The first picture is awesome. It makes me want to come over and hang out. Plus, I think all the chairs (and the sofa) work perfectly together.

Wow! Insta-finalist! ;-)

I like the fruit baske. The whole apartment is very nice though. I need it for a week in May, he-he.

I think this place would ahve gotten more positive votes with a bit of tweaking for the photos. Blinds would mask that uninspiring view.
Get a bedcover that complete hides the mattress--like huge fitted sheet, so it looks sleek
Move all clutter off surfaces, like desk.
Hide closet clutter.
Is that an aluminum trash can next to the table with wire stools? Huh?

what a nice treat for us to see where you live. you have utilized the available space very effectively. the bed is unique and i especially like the extention of the bamboo to make a bedside table. i think you need a taller lamp. the mirror is fantastic aqnd the floors being exposed definitely gives the area a feeling of spaciousness. hope you're both very happy in your functional and cleverly appointed flat.

The first room is fantastic--simple, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. The metal stools in the kitchen are not quite as inviting, but the bamboo bed is fantastic. Inspirational!

People need someplace to put their transh and this one is sleek and attractive in its own way. And the bed is sooooo great.

Great use of the space in each area! Nice desk in the bedroom. A piece or two of Stickley would look great in the apartment! Loved seeing where you two spend your "at home" time!

Do not like the furniture at all.

I love your 'Swim at own risk' sign. I love when a found object takes on a larger meaning in a different context - it's perfect. And I love that your mom commented - adorable.
