Metropolis Magazine. A great source for design across many disciplines.
What inspired you?
Contemporary Modernism. As a designer, my aesthetics tend to be influenced by the functionality and clean design of modernism, combined with a more playful sense of finishes, colors, and accent details.

Wait, is this in the same building as Rob?
Yep. It's the same building. Hi Andy! (we've never met)
LOVE your view of the Church! And I envy your balcony. I have a sliding glass door to nowhere (they call it a "pocket balcony")
And I love the way your furniture all comes together. The beautiful orange couch and clay pots, and the steel (wow would I love to see another shot of that desk)
By the way - "you know you're a cat owner when..." I found myself searching through the pics for a litterbox. I do that in all of the entries where I see a cat - especially the super-tiny NYC entries.
Another great Portland entry! I am a bit surprised at how few entries there are from San Francisco... I thought we were all so stylish! But perhaps everyone else here is as poor as I am? Or else all the cool kids have moved to portland!
Rob, my Tallulah's litter box is cleverly disguised under a corner table. people don't even notice it until I point it out. She also eats on the bottom shelf of a bookshelf in the kitchen.. no cat bowls to knock over or get in the way. :)
Great space.
Where is that ceiling fan from? Any ideas?
very nice!
that first photo with the gothic window
suggested the out-of-the-closet groovy vicar's pad
was about to be showcased...
I'm struck how the light is sooooo
different in the west coast entries
compared to the east.
Aquarabbit, I'm starting to wonder what ever happened to San Francisco Style... did everyone go back to Iowa? Move on to New York? Retreat to San Mateo? Spend all their money on a $500,000 loft and have nothing left for decorating?
Great apartment, anyway! That yellow-and-blue combo makes some of the rooms look computer-generated, which is kind of a fun effect. Also nice to see that a gray-and-white cat can look urban.
Guido, I moved to LA from NYC and when I mailed pics of my apt to my east coast friends they all said, "You have so much light!!!" It makes me laugh because by LA standards my apartment is fairly dark.
This is really well done. Bathroom is a real stand-out. What colors / paints are those behind and to the left of the toilet...? Is that a concrete surface on the left? Hard to tell in the pic. thanks!
Scratch that - it's probably not a desk I see. It's probably a bookshelf (and it's sweet!)
I really love the use of colour in this.
I took pictures of this art installation in London once that was of off-center houses on cranes (not making sense...don't know how to describe it...I'll see if I can dig up the photos) because this totally reminds me of that. the color, and angles. Nice strategic use of cat and cooking girlfriend (or hired model?) in your photos! :)
I will move in tomorrow. It's okay, I like cats. Although once I'm settled we may swap out at least on of the track light rails for something a touch softer, maybe a nelso saucer pendant lamp.
Your 'studio' would be labeled a 'Deluxe One Bedroom' in Manhattan.
Are there many of these loft-style apartments/conversions in Portland?
The layout of the apartment is fantastic... except that it appears you are completely closetless.
I'm just not digging the colors, though.
But I do envy the space.
This apartment and the first entry is in the building that I live in called The Mosaic. They all came painted these colors. So it seems to me that all he did was decorate. Nothing has been altered. The developer, whom I work for, did everything you all like.
I agree with Frank. The building is great, but the tenants did not do much. The paint, layout, lighting, and all materials were picked by the developer. Check out the entry 'Rob's Apartmequarium' - its the same building.
And, to answer an earlier post, there are many loft conversions in Portland, but I believe this building (the Mosaic) was all new construction.
There are about a dozen or so loft conversions here in Portland, however most current developments are new construction. The term "loft" is used too liberally these days. They also throw around the term brownstone and flat here while none are. There is someone who posted a good loft conversion example in Portland-see Deb's Inspired Loft. It looks like it's in the Pearl District which is the industrial section of Portland very close to downtown that has experienced a huge real estate surge over the last 5 years. Most expensive section of Portland but pales in comparison to large cities.
Yikes! The Apartmequarium is the same color scheme and kitchen cabinets...
Clearly the developer knew his target market, since both entries have gotten raves in the comments.
I love this. It's just like one big, lovely sculpture.
This building pwns!
Love the use of colors here & layout. Other than the living room being a tad crowded, I really like this:)
Awesome kitchen.
Very nice! Clearly in the running.
