apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Finalist #1: James & Margaret's Iconic Studio

In the first of our 13 finalists (why 13? later), we roll out new supporting evidence for your perusal. Of course the six judges are making the final decisions, but that doesn't mean your comments won't sway them...

Name: James & Margaret
Location: New York, NY
Size: 565 s/f Studio

1. Who was your favorite entry and why? (other than your own apt.)

We feel David and Im’s entry effectively combines their separate lives, taking full advantage of the height of their apartment in a way that is efficient and beautifully crafted. Their tasteful integration of storage is inspiring.

2. Why you should be the champ?

In addition to a modest renovation of a dilapidated kitchen, we distilled our design ideas into a single element that allowed the main space to function in a variety of ways. This intervention satisfied the needs of two people with different sleep schedules, keeping much of the space open for multiple types of entertaining. This concept allowed us to realize our design intent on a limited budget.

Excellent design choices! What material (pre-cut? custom?) did you use for the wood slat walls---and approx what was the cost? good luck!

Love the media center, where is it from?

Nice place, but "on a limited budget" seems like a bit of a stretch compared to many of your competitors, especially with all of the new appliances you added to your kitchen.

My personal reaction to this (my own taste) is that it's far too glum and austere (the dark wood, colors, and the lack of "stuff" around). Not livable, by my measure. But your design is intelligent, and you have used your materials creatively. Something about the shape of that wall around the bed makes me think of an airport lounge, though.

Yummy. That was delicious.

I love all the wood. Very California, 60s but still fresh.
Question: Did you paint your refrigerator? Considering painting mine.

Congratulations! You've done a great job with both design and execution. I like the warmth injected into the space by the lovely wood tones; the dining area looks comfortable and inviting; and the use of the cubbies in the bedroom (carved into the interior of the dining room bench) represent the essence of ingenious small-space design. Lots of personal and original touches here as well. Excellent job all around!

Deserved of being a top 10 finalist, but a little too much with the wood. Where one bedroom wall meets another wall it's just too much of the wood. I like the wood, just not that much of it. That said I could see an Eames lounger and ottoman complimenting this space, especially on that nice carpet.
