apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Finalist #2: Lucy's Love Shack

This is the second of the finalists. WOW. Everyone is so impressive. And this is a rental! Check out the video below the jump.

Name: Eric & Ilana
Location: Upper West Side - NYC
Size: 371 sf - Rental, 2nd Floor Walk-up

1. Who was your favorite entry and why? (other than your own apt.)

"Hakarl and Jili's Bold Bright Moves' is a top notch competitor. They offset a challenging floor plan with bold but simple graphic colors and artwork. Like our apartment, this one is exceptionally small but doesn’t feel cramped. We love the concept of using bright and fresh colors in the living space, then contrasting with a crisp neutral palette in the bedroom. The clean lines of the furniture and orb-like lighting theme offer continuity between the spaces."

2. Why you should be the champ?

"At only 371sf, we make efficient use of every inch while managing to preserve an open and airy feel. Our aesthetic refinement has evolved over time as we pared down to rid our life of clutter. Special challenges are where we really shine, since we are restricted from making any physical modifications.

With just our imagination, paint, and some creative storage solutions, we created a place that is eminently livable. If chosen, we plan to buy a crib from DWRjax as we figure out how to make way for one more...to stay or not to stay, that is the question?!?!? "

I still don't consider an open closet a storage solution (looks too much like a clothing store), but the rest of your apartment is beautifully done. I love the calming bedroom, with the doghouse under the bed. If you can manage a baby in that little space, more power to you, but you'll have to get closet doors before the child starts crawling!

Great idea leaving the unpainted squares to show through the shadowbox frames! A nice clean place. I like what you've done.

Kudos to you for such a lovely, efficient use of space! I've been browsing through the entries for ideas for my new apartment and I found yours to be the best suited for real-life everyday use. The painted 'faux headboard' looks terrific - I think I'll be scrapping my original plan of building one with MDF. And I'll also be getting a drop leaf table for my kitchen as well. Where did you get your closet systems? (My new apartment oddly has no storage/closets).
