Name: Allison, Sean & Robot
Location: Los Angeles (Silverlake)
Size & Type: 500 sq. feet Duplex
Favorite resource:
Design Blogs, Flea Markets, High Schools, and Found Objects.
Pitch:
Although the floor plan was odd (front door in the center of the living room) it was the perfect palette for our flea market minimalist experiment. Hard woods all around and many built in accoutrements, our little home has character and charm seeping throughout. Even though it is tiny, we took great care designing each space to maximize the quirky appeal of our diminutive dwelling. Our theme was to let our Silverlake community manifest itself in our living space.

It is really hard to get a sense of this apartment from the pictures posted. The first one looks lovely, but the next two do little to showcase your home...

now THIS is the kind of place i love seeing!!
it is obvious to me that you really adore you small space and a lot of thought and personality has been put into each and every detail...i love the architectural details as well as your attention to detail. the wall colors are so great! the black trim in the bedroom is fantastic, the hint of peach in the beigey living room keeps hue from being boring, and you HAVE to disclose the info for that blue paint in the 3rd photo! i also like the mix of screen prints, paintings, and mirors...
this place has been my favorite so far, because i really get the sense that it could GROW. its not already "perfect" or "done", ya know? its wonderful how it is and i know it will get even better the more flea markets Allison and Sean go to!
bravo, bravo.

Very nice and very Silverlake.

really lovely. i like the subtle color and pattern use. it looks good but also very liveable. it's nice to see a home that actually looks like a place you can imagine yourself cooking, reading, hanging out, etc., as opposed to a showroom. kudos to you !!!

I covet your apartment's built-ins! The closet arrangement also made me smile because I have a similar set-up: I get the bedroom closet, while my boyfriend is stuck with a hall closet. I wonder if yours whined about it as much at move-in as mine did? :)

Oh, disregard that second part... Now I see his is in the bedroom too.

Really hard to get a decent view from the posted photos, but I like a lot about this space. Love the chairs in front of the fireplace (I'd be more than happy to raid a high school sometime) and the eclectic, comfortably-worn vibe of this clearly loved home. I always enjoy seeing a place created more from good eyes/good buys than from a healthy checking account. Very cleverly put together!

Totally agree with Sydney. We shouldn't be rewarding people who already dropped significant coin for a cute place... creativity and ingenuity is what's all about, no? You guys have a bit of that going. Who/what is robot?

Big fan of the artistic pictures. The close up shots display the intricate detail and color. Very cool flea finds.
Although the chairs do remind me of school days and peeling gum off the bottom. haha.

I would never go to work if my place looked this good. Sean and Allison, do you work from home? The colors of the bedsheets and the laundry room will make a strong showing in my heavan.

I agree with the previous posts, we shouldn't be rewarding fat bank accounts. There is an obvious disparity between those who rent and put together really well designed, cute apartments and those who own a small space and paid ten's of thousands of dollars (or more) to achieve perfection. There are some serious flaws in this contest, but for me, this apartment is cool as hell.

You may have the coolest place imagineable, but I really can't tell that much from the close cropping of the photos. Sorry.

I love what I've seen of this place so far. Wish there were more photos though. Kinda tough to vote with the ones posted.

I heart the blue wall in the last photo, the cosy feeling of the bedroom nook, and the Guiness poster above the stove. We are especially amused by Her Majesty's likeness on the pillow in the first photo.

I love the first photo. Do you know what the paint color is?

it's very retro chic and i'm just loving all the flea market finds. i'd rather see and home put together from random pieces than overpriced sets that are just mass-produced in stores.
you all did an awesome job on your apartment!

What a great use of space! Apartment is tiny and yet seems so spacious because of the optimal use of the space tied in with trendy, colorful and edgy patterns throughout. Great job!

Thanks to all that voted for our pad.
I'll try to answer all questions asked...if any are missed it isn't intentional.
Robot - He's our cute little dog. I promise to sneak him in a pic, if there is any hope of moving to the next round.
Paint Colors - Seriously I have no idea! The kitchen/laundry room colors (blue/red) were taken from a Anthropologie catalog photograph. A model was wearing this beautiful Asian inspired top, with similar colors. Loved it, and wanted to paint part of our house to match.
No idea what the living room color is...start at Home Depot, that's all the info I can give you. Cans are long gone.
Cropped Photographs - Sorry about that. Our home is so tiny, it's hard to get all the great elements in one photo. It's not a wide open space like some studios, so it makes it more difficult to capture wide angles.
Queen Pillow - Ebay.
Home Work - Nope, we both work away...although we both do a bit of freelance work here.
Fat Wallets - Fat Chance. It's really difficult to design a home with a small bank account. We are always making minor improvements. We rent, so it's silly to throw tons of money at our place when those design choices won't necessarily come with us if and when we move.
Thanks again. Please let us know if you have more questions, we'll try to answer back.
