Name: Meredith Jenks
Location: Echo Park, CA
Size & Type: 395 sq.ft. 1 Bedroom
Favorite resource:The Internet, estate sales, and thrift stores
Pitch: When I found this apartment on Craigslist I knew it was the one. It has the most fantastic view, hardwood floors, and a washer + dryer!
Pitch Cont'd:
I like colorful things surrounding me, and after unpacking I realized I also like a lot of toys. I collect pieces from thrift stores and estate sales mostly so I have a lot of things that are unique to my home. Like I said before, my place is still a work in progress. I don't even have a couch yet, but I think it still expresses my personality pretty thoroughly.
Your favorite element:
My favorite element is the view. My old apartment looked out onto a parking lot so I always kept the blinds closed. Now I can see Dodger Stadium and the Echo Park Hills from my front porch. My favorite piece of furniture is the credenza, I bought it at a garage sale for 3 dollars.
So I guess #11 was removed? Thank you.
This place is cute, looks like it has great bones but the selection of photographs doesn't give me enough information. I'm also not really seeing any "style".

What's presented hear visually just doesn't convey how you live in the space: it's just white walls and a (very) few pieces of furniture.

What was #11?
I love your credenza, too. But I have to agree with the other comments that we don't get enough sense of what you have and how you are putting it together.

Never mind, I just saw #11.

Agreed, not enough sense of what is going on here.

Nice blank canvas, but what can you do with it? Seems your kids are is just sitting on the floor. Can't see enough of the space in the pictures either.

Yup, apt looks cool but please enter again next year when you have art on the walls and furniture on the floor. And I hope the landlord will let you paint...

I love your toys and art and there are some great pieces of furniture here. I can see you have a since of style. Your place has potential.
I hope you enter again next year when it's a little more fleshed out.

In your first picture there is an office space that seems complete. I would have liked seeing another photo of that. I agree there just aren't enough pictures that explain what part of a room we're viewing.
I do like that glass painted door the colors are beautiful did you do it yourself or was it like that when you moved in?

What.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but while this space may have nice bones and great views, this contest is for dwellings at their finest. I would suggest that this applicant try again in a later contest after she refines the space (read: less dirty dishes, more furniture).

It's hard please us here in the AT community because we want "lived in", but not too "lived in". I noticed the dishes in the sink too and wondered if that was done on purpose. Shrug. I probably would have gone with an empty sink.
I'm sure this place will look nice once the progress is complete!

agree with everyone. i was tempted to enter this year, but as i am only 4 months into my space, i am holding off till next year.
my words of encouragement: the space looks like it has SO much potential! and once you get everything arranged and the place filled out, im sure it'll be a frontrunner in '08. (pssst! hem those curtains in front of the door!)
my complaints: the sink o' dishes, the (root)beer bottle in the window, and please please dont tell me that you painted white what may have been a teak or walnut credenza...

Hey Guys,
I pretty much agree with all of you. I entered because they were asking for submissions and although I knew my place wasn't anywhere near completion (I moved in a month ago from a studio apartment) I decided to give it a go. I figured I would get some good feedback at the very least. I have a loooooong list of things I want to do to the place, don't worry.
To answer some questions. The dishes in the sink are actually clean, just drying in a rack. I put this material called Letraset on the front French door. It lets light in, but gives me privacy and casts beautiful colors around the room throughout the day. And, no, I did not paint the credenza white, it was like that when I bought it. Eventually I plan to refinish it.
The most embarrassing thing about all this is that I am a photographer. But obviously architecture photography is not my strong point. I think I called it Architorture when I had to take a class in school. Next time around I will get my friend who shoots for Domino to take the shots for me.
Thanks!
Meredith

Don't be embarrassed! Next year I'm sure it'll be great! I can't wait to see how your space progresses. I just don't think it was ready for this particular contest. :)

great space, and Echo Park is so cool.

The dishes in your sink are great. Don't listen to those other people, heaven forbid we should see how someone actualy lives. The perfect home is a fantacy from magazine photo spreads, but dirty dishes like small spaces are a reality. Besides, houses are ment to be lived in not treated like sterile showrooms.

Personally, Meredith, I'm drooling all over my keyboard right now at the thought of all the exciting potential your place holds. Xeno is right, don't listen to the haters, AT was actively asking people to submit their places so what do you have to lose? Nada. And it looks like you have everything to gain in such a beautiful space, so good luck and have fun with the decorating!

all of one dirty dish in the sink, and you AT snobs go to town on the entry. sheesh!
i envy the space you have here, it's light and airy, and has a LOT of potential. thanks for having the daring do to enter your space into the lion's den at an early stage...if anyone deserves the dwr certificate, it's you!
