apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#17 PB's Maximized Space

Name: PB
Location: Long Beach, CA.
Size & Type: 635 sq. ft. 1 bedroom condo

Favorite resource: Craigslist for furniture, eBay for art and a Mom with a pickup truck.

Pitch: My apartment doesn't have a lot of architectural detail. There are no high ceilings or cute little nooks and the hall way is awkward at best. However, after a lot of trial and error, I've found ways to maximize and enjoy all of my space.

Your favorite element:

The large living room window brings in great light. (Great for people, pets and plants. Bad for photos).

I love all your greenery, especially the cluster of what looks like succulents. Very nice space. Cute kitty, too.

This isn't quite my style, since many of the tabletops appear to be covered with plants (which are great, btw, don't get me wrong) so I wonder how those spaces are utilized if they're always covered...and I'm not a fan of the color or mixing of fabrics, but that is just me. :)

I'm sure others here will be very happy to see that your living room area is not centered around a TV...

- Does the white table serve as a dining table/stand?
- Love the black loveseat with the high back
- Love the shelving in the bedroom area, with the alternating portraits

*edit:

I like plants. I am just not sure about the placement of them and/or selection of plants.

I really like this space.I happen to love plants AND flokati rugs/throws so this is right up my alley.

you've got the hollywood thing going on, thats for sure...

the bad: i think the green in the living room is...um...well, i think there are LOTS of much better colors that you could use. it looks like Extra gum. and the paintings are all hung way too high, which makes them feel awkward. bring them down and place them to compliment the furniture...centering them in the room does absolutely nothing...

the good: i like your iPod dock, the spotty blue pillow, and your kitty.

i feel like it needs more work than "has potential", sorry.

I'll be watching the comments on this one closely (I'm already looking around my place at my picture placement :-)) because this looks almost exactly like what I'd do. Although I would choose a different wall color if I could. Your photos are great and I'd feel right at home in your place. I like it.

I disagree with goodnightdean -- think the wall color in the living room is yummy. What is it?

What would make this space work for me would be to:

1. Rehang the artwork in the living room. Bring the pieces down, bring them a bit closer together and have the "hang line" be the top of each piece. (This is a big peeve of mine -- hanging pictures above the sight line -- well, unless your 6'5"). Your other pieces are nicely displayed.

2. If you're going to use a table as a plant table then get rid of the chairs. If you're going to have chairs at a table, and these look pretty cool, then make the table a table.

3. As soon as possible, ditch the round white rugs. I'm seeing spots! I'd rather see one white rectangular rug, but that's just me.

What I love are the shelves in the bedroom and the way you pulled together disparate elements by the unifying white. I also love the black and white flooring in the bedroom.

I like this a lot. Like others have said, the art on the walls needs to be lower, and visually centered in the space. The small black cube holding the plant pretty much defines the visual center... this way they'll relate to the furniture and it'll all looks united.

I like the color of the walls and the plants...maybe some of them should be grouped together instead of evenly spaced around the apartment.

I am a plant partisan, so it's always refreshing to see spaces with lots of greenery! I think it looks swell -- lots of great suggestions above.

I agree with Leah, I think the green walls are lovely. I lived in a subletted apt for three months with similiar color walls in the living room and always found it very calming. The shelves in the bedroom and the lamp are really cute! I could so see myself living here :)

I recently discovered this contest and this website. I went through most of the cool apt submissions and I noticed quite a few of them have the same acrylic lamp as seen in the bedroom above. Interesting...
I wish I would have submitted my apartment 'cause I would have loved the constructive design criticism. Is there a website where one can submit photos and get feedback?

Stellar, for sure!

I love all the plants, especially the cluster of succulents on the table. The wall colors are amazing, and those fluffy white round rugs on the wood floor... perfect!

Love the stripes on the wall in the 2nd photo, very cute! Joining in the crowd saying that the art is hung too high, and each piece seems separate from the others. I like your sideboard thingy in the bedroom, and the Godzilla toy (I had one the same when I was a kid!).

Really cute. I love the color of the walls. Your art is really cute too, but looks hung a little too high.

I too would like to know the name of the color on the walls - interesting choice which may work in my boy's room.

The plants on the cafe table bug me....its for sitting right? But I love the use of the shaggy rugs, the matching kitty and the Godzilla in the bedroom. Yeah, your artwork is way too high. A good rule is "60 off center", meaning that the center of the piece should be 60" from the floor. Reason being that falls within most peoples average eye-level. You can also bring all three pieces closer together and hang them in a more organic grouping that will give you one big focal point on the wall.

Fun, fun, fun. Great use of color. Love the walls, that delightful wicker chair, the swag lamp, the furniture, the cat. Jealous of the plants. I can never get areca palms to stay alive.

I love the round rugs!! What a cute idea! Don't listen to them, you have all this light GO FOR THE PLANTS.

(erm, sorry, speaking as a basement dweller, I am sad at lack of light, and thus lack of plants).

And your furniture is gorgeous. Ditto on lowering the art, though. Your art vignette near the blue chair (the framed posters) looks gorgeous!

Insta, imho. Warm, cozy, and ... I just like it :-) I wish I could see more.
