apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#18 - George's Urban Opulence

Name: George
Location: Long Beach, CA
Size & Type: 637 sq.ft. 1-bedroom

Favorite resource: Craigslist

Pitch: My love for art and lack of open wall space was the challenge here. I decided to let my window treatments double as artwork. I replicated the Rothko on a home-made roman shade and the Monsieur Z illustration onto japanese sliding screen. I also wanted to have a bar and was able to make use of a small unused corner in dining area. I got to design and/or re-upholster/re-surface most of my own furniture.

Your favorite element:

I'd have to say the Monsieur Z mural I'm painting on the window treatment, it's been almost a year since I conceptualized and it's a great conversation piece. I wanted a piece that would cover the large window with a fantasy like image that when opened up, still functions as 2 seperate images, the sunset on left and the model on the right.

Window shades as art is a fantastic idea!

Is the entrant named George or Mike?

Really cute. That's a mural over your sofa? I thought it was a mirror for a second. I love your art work. I also really love the industrial look of your dining table combined with the lanterns for softness.

Your bedroom is really cute too. I love how the red chair pops against the grey. What is that on your bedroom wall? Another of your paintings? Wallpaper.

Great job. Hope you win a prize so you can buy a new sofa.

I think it's really cool that you created art out of your window shades but it's a little sad that you blocked out the light. It makes it seem like you live in a winowless basement.

Let there be light! Or at least non-flash photography...I can't judge this one fairly due to the quality of the photos (this t'ain't a photo contest).

rothko shade in living room...nice sentiment, but poorly executed.

The space looks too dark for my tastes. I also can't tell where all "the stuff" is. :(

I do enjoy the the painting above the dining room table - very modern and colorful.

The space is nice, but the window treatments look like they need a cure. Sorry.

i think all bright white furnishings with clean lines (nix the faux-velvet...) could really give this space some lift and some light. right now the metals and the grays and the reds and the maroons give it a dungeon-y feel, which i'm sure isn't the look you're going for. i think it needs more california, more rexroth, more trina turk.

There's a lot here I like. However, I agree very much that the quality of the photography hurts your submission. unfortunately with the grey color scheme, the photos make the overall space look a bit grim, though I bet in reality it's not that way at all.

Name is George, not Mike, hehe. I was only able to enter 3 photos initially so i couldn't show you windows all opened up because you wouldn't be able to see artwork and that is one of the great things about my space. lots of light pours thru during the daytime, the artwork is painted on canvas and ricepaper so it isn't completely opaque.

Not badly designed, per se, but too dark and extreme for my tastes. If it suits his tastes, rock on.

Disregarding the photo quality (noise and blur):
-> where is the bedside lamp or something the bedroom? Do you stumble toward the bed in the dark?
-> I personally love the grey scheme, but you really should have shown it to us with the lights on the way you see it. Flash makes it flat, and its hard to imagine how it feels. Like shari said: "I bet in reality its not that way at all".
-> I really like your furniture! I think that it all works well together, in size, color and texture. (Don't go for all white if its not your thing, I say.) The bedroom, outside of that light question, looks very lux, imho.
-> Neat clock on the wall :)

I think this is cool, and has potential. I think I'd have voted insta finalist if you showed us (a) photographs that reflected more "small space" solutions (like the bar!) (b) showed us the apartment in more natural light - either your own, or outside, but not flash.

I really love the balance of stark clean lines against eclectic use of furnishings. The use of pop art and bright colors offsets the gray and white story. i do agree lighing could be better but i can see all the detail none the less. I also like the scale of the upholstered wall juxtaposed with the platform bed. it's nice to finally see color and artwork, alot of the entries are missing elements, i.e. paint, art, and other neccessary design layers.

I love the place! The dining room table is great & bar area is great. The mural in the living room is a perfect addition to the different shades of grey, adding just enough color. You have my vote for insta finalist.

I'd recommend removing two of the lamps over the dining table - with three of differing types it makes it look like a furniture store.

Creative in a very polarizing way... as photographed, it's so thoroughly Not My Thang that it's the exact opposite of My Thang. And yet, I can imagine some hypothetical George showing it off, serving drinks, putting on a little music, getting the guests chit-chatting -- and the space working brilliantly as his setting, so that I'd go home from the party liking the space because it was So Utterly George.

Sumptious urban backdrop for an ultra-chic soiree.

So many entries suffer from unoriginality. A lot look trendy or overshopped. There are few entries that don't have zebra rug teak credenza eames chair lucite table formuliac interior damage. This designer imagined a fun home making several unusual design choices.

What works:

* Art functioning as window treatments, transforming the
space from uptown gallery to downtown lounge party
space with the pull of a string.

* Pieces that recall classic designs, but also modernize them.
The grey mid-century style chair and the reimagined coffee
tables, for example.

* Imaginative use of textures and surfaces. I see shag. I see
chinchilla. I see felt, leather, wool, velvet, and sequin.
Done in a tasteful and engaging manner.

* Fresh design concept. This space lacks easily identifiable
pieces. I have not seen any of the furniture or accessories
featured on apartment therapy or in other design
magazines...which leads me to belive that many of the
pieces were built or made rather than shopped or pulled
from a catalogue. It is highly refreshing to see a space
lacking design cliches. I am sure there is a story behind
each creation. It seems like a lot of talent and time went
into conceptualizing this design.

This is a fully realized design that works on every level and adresses all interior concerns. Art. Acessories. Comfort. Entertainment. Everything is considered. A cool neutral grey with futuristic silver creates a modern stage for bright, rich yellows, oranges, red and orchid.

This space is a testament to creativity and style. Style is not bought or copied. It is CREATED. It is CULTIVATED.

That being said, I would like the opportunity to see more photgraphs of the space as well as detailed closeups of individual items such as the bar, the upholstered bedroom wall, and the buffet/credenza behind the dining table.

I am interested in seeing the space with the windows open; seeing all the elements transform from sunny day to glamourous evening.

Inspiring and timeless.

this is too weird for my tastes, too design heavy i guess. it doesnt look very liveable. but he fact that you live in it and love it says something, and i admire you for being so bold in such a small space!

Love how you found room for a little bar in the first picture; not entirely sure about the art on the curtains; I like all the different textures, although the flash photography isn't doing the textured items any favours.

I read somewhere that you should always have at *least* one thing you love in your home that makes people raise an eyebrow - that way you know you haven't played it too safe and boring :) I'm seeing a lot of "raised eyebrows" comments here (including mine), I hope you continue to make your home reflect your interests.

This seems like a good place for a party... some one hand me a martini and play something jazzy!!!

The apartment has a really nice open feel for such a small space... good job with the execution.

Really like the eclectic combination of funiture, materials and the furry walls... LOVE IT!!!

This is a little too Silence of the Lambs for my comfort. Maybe it's that last photo. Is it post-processed as b&w with a spot of color, or is it really that night-vision goggles monochromatic (with a spot of color)?

My gut reaction to these photos is: FBI, surveillance, psychopa-- Oops, I mean, WOW! This is FABULOUS! It's GOOD that you decorated your apartment like this!

Seriously, though, it's just a difference in taste, and this just ain't my thang. But I like the windowshade-art idea very much.
