apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#23 Eve and Paige's hip pad

Name: Eve and Paige
Location: San Diego, CA
Size & Type: 640 square feet, studio

Favorite resource:
Best stores: From the Hip (on Rowena in Silverlake), and Out of Vogue (downtown Fullerton), where I got our dining table from the Brady Bunch set! Best inspiration: British design magazines and my daily blogs...

Pitch:

When we moved in together, I brought two dogs and two cats and he brought bikes, surfboards, and so many plants. It is a small space filled with a lot of life, but through the use of color and light, we've transformed it into a real home. The house has an awkward floor plan (bathroom off the kitchen?) and was plain, white and boxy but our kind landlords let us paint to add a little character. With a bit of creative storage, a growing capacity for editing, and our shared imaginations, our home now feels like a real nest.

Your favorite element:

Lighting - there is absolutely nothing that can affect the mood and quality of your space more - best place to spend your design money.

I really love your place. LOL I REALLY feel for you we're a "blended family" too and now have three dogs, snowboards and mountain bikes. It's hard to make it all work and You've done a great job, a very stylish nest! although I agree your photos don't do it much justice.

Love the nook where your dogs are hanging out and storing the bikes in the dining area. Good use of space, though I wonder if guests find the bikes to be intrusive ;)

I'd call it somewhere in between finalist and potential because although it looks dark (pictures taken at night?) it has as very homey bohemian feel to it, and it certainly looks lived in and functional, but is not my style.

I know there's going to be a lot of "too cluttered" or "no cohesive style" comments, but I love this! I'd feel so at home here. And what a great way to store the surfboard instead of propped in a corner! Insta-finalist for me.

I love your place the colors are warm and inviting! I'm so loving your plants! They are great and I also like that nook with the poochies sitting! Can you tell me what is hanging over the nook? It's a little difficult for me to tell since the last two photos are dark.

i really really love the first photo. the colors...the plants...i just think the other two photos are on the dark side. you have some amazing furniture, and having two dogs and two cats myself, i really love that your apartment is bustling with animal energy ! i identify so much with your apartment and think it looks amazing. you should be proud.

I really like the surfboard stored above the nook. Surfboard as art!

the photos (lighting) aren't doing the space justice! on first glance, it looked dark and cluttered, but when i lingered on the photos, i started to really see the details. you have some great pieces! and some very nice vignettes of 'things' that make it feel like home. i also love the bikes and surfboard...they feel purposeful - more like objects than "stuff we gotta store". overall: good job on the space, not so good job on the fotoes ;)

Is that a pink faux bearskin rug under the coffee table? Love it!

Very eclectic and homey. It has a definite personality. Cohesive style is bunk. Do you. Bring in what you like and it will all add up to a reflection of yourself. And the nook ROCKS!!!

Dang. This is another entry that I think would've been served so much better with better photography. Looks comfy.

Nice...but I'm getting massive flashback attacks from your second photo.

That light fixture you have hanging by your bikes used to be EVERYWHERE in the 70's where I lived (hint: those light were usually made in the Philippines and think Navy/military housing).

Very inviting place in an "Islands" restaurant way.

I'll have a Sandpiper on Wheat with cheese fries...

it's great! I really like the danish modern furniture. You have some GREAT pieces. I really dig the overall vibe of your place. It looks like a 70's surf house. Perfect for San Diego!

like the furniture but really needs reupholstering (saggy chic!) and the purple rug is the stuff of nightmares

like the space but please cut back those plants: they look unloved rather than sculptural. They seem to be struggling for light, accentuating the darkness of the photos.

I can identify with two dogs & two cats in a studio apt plus tons of outdoor hobbies with gear... I love the surfboard over the doorway! You have done a good job storing the big hobby gear in plain sight without it taking up floor space or being offensive. I would prefer to see the bookcases as cabinets-with-doors to minimize the "appearance" of clutter.

Love the rug! Did you buy it (Where?) or make it : )
