apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#26 Chris's California Bungalow

Name: Chris
Location: West Hollywood, CA
Size & Type: 477 sq. ft. 1 bedroom

Favorite resource:Favorite resources are flea markets, DWR & L.A. Modern Auctions, where you can bid on a variety of interesting items, from iconic design pieces to unique paintings and objects.

Pitch:My tiny apartment is cool because it's a mix of mid century modern, flea market finds and offbeat vintage paintings and objects. I think that the careful editing of furniture and objects can make a small space feel much larger than it really is.

Pitch Cont'd:

The apartment is a California bungalow that feels like it's a remote mountain or beach retreat but it's right in the middle of Los Angeles. Going for an eclectic bohemian vibe , the apartment is midcentury modern meets natural history museum meets big sur cabin meets Man Ray's studio.

Your favorite element:

My favorite element in my house is the cathedral ceiling in the living room which gives the small room a sense of drama and scale. The wood beams add a rustic feel to play against some of the contemporary furniture.

i loooooove the small sunroom/dining room!
the bedroom could definitely use some art or at least some character to the bed...it sortof looks like a prison cot.

but the other two photos scream "great taste".

jealous of your ceilings!

You have some nice furniture, but some of the decorative pieces in the living room seem a bit random. I don't think the painting of the ship or the portrait on the wall are really doing your room any favors.

Cool cabinet in your living room (right side of pic). What is it?

I love your couch and matching coffee table. Wouldn't you like them closer so you could put your feet up though? Maybe not everyone does that.

What is that crazy looking thing in the first picture? I don't mind it, just curious. Different is cool.

Simple, lovely dining room.

Wow. My first reaction to that cabinet was that something could be living in it.

Great collection of finds/unique stuff.

I politely disagree with Sydney; I love the ship painting.

I like the clean classy look of the dining room. What kind of vase is that on the table?

i love the dining room. sometimes all white looks spectacular , not boring, and your dining room is proof of that.

ps- how is that couch? i am thinking of getting it. have you had any guests sleep over on it?

Your California bungalow is very hip. I was undecided about your bedroom until someone used the word "prison" in conjunction with it. Now I just think it's HOT.

Do you know when your bungalow was built? Is it stucco on the outside or wood siding?

I wish we got exterior shots of the contestants' homes.

With so many ecclectic and cool pieces your continuity is very impressive - like the coffee table and sofa combo.
It also feels like you could regularly rotate a good art collection in each room. Love that!

Walks, personality, talks personality.

I really love this place. Especially the paintings.

Very nice. I love contrast between the shiny black floors and the white of your tulip table and chairs. Are the floors new, or something that's been there for a while? I've been searching for flooring like that, but have been told that it doesn't hold up well. Your floors, however, look fantastic. Would love to know if you find them to be as quality of a product as they appear to be in these pictures.

Mod, funk, eclectic, and retro chic all wrapped up in one! I like the simplicity and I really fancy your globe... (I dig em as they add visual interest and colour to a space). Good job!

I'm normally a colour junkie, but the white/monochromatic thing works in this space. I love the living room (especially that piece hanging over the sofa) and the kitchen, but I found the sleeping space a bit institutional for my tastes. Despite that, I still called this entry an insta-finalist. Overall it's just a great space.

I'm gonna try to answer a few of the questions posted...btw, thanks for the compliments
1- couch is a case study couch avail at dwr or modernica. Very comfortable to sleep on.
2.- Flooring in dining area is black linoleum- it's been there since I moved in- I think they are ok but would probably choose something else if I owned the apt. They do get scuffed and the black can sometimes retain heat during the summer.3- Oh yeah... the cabinet- I bought it at auction- a kind of strange curio cabinet. I would imagine that it came from a shop of some sort. It's got lights inside and looks kind of cool illuminated at night.
