Name: Lou Lou and Nico
Location: Venice Beach, CA
Size & Type: 647 sq. ft. one bedroom duplex
Favorite resource:Our favorite resource is travel--many elements in our home come from things we've seen in places we love, and adapted to our small space (like our concrete countertops inspired by a winery in Napa Valley).
Pitch: Small house + small mortgage = less working and more time with each other--and it's walking distance to the beach. We replaced wood doors with glass, creating a west facing window to watch sunsets.
Pitch Cont'd:
For our dining/ bar area, we removed half a wall, added a concrete top, and used a cabinet for a pedestal. We removed the suspended ceiling in the kitchen and added a skylight, creating an accessible attic and a feeling of space. We added a tankless water heater, then used wall cabinets to create a slim-line pantry/laundry room.
Your favorite element:
For our fav element, it's a tie. For one of us, it's the corner of the kitchen counter that doubles as our "office". For the other, it's the dining/bar area. We can squeeze six people around it, and it's the heart of our home.
This is a cool pad. :D

I love the potted grass on your counter. Where did you get it?

is there leg room at the computer on the counter? i like the square windows above the cabinets in the kitchen!

Oh it's fun to see your own place on here :)
Potted wheat grass is from the local Ralph's grocery (much cheaper than flowers)
Yes to the legroom eec007--When we open the cabinet doors (like in the photo) there are 23.5 inches from the bottom inside cabinet to the bottom of the inside shelf--I'm sitting there right now :)
Please don't hesitate to give me constructive criticism!!! IT's lovely to hear the positive, but it's sometimes the negative that really helps...I can take it ;)--I've seen so many amazing spaces on this website, and I think the main benefit of this contest is all these critical design eyes to help with what you may not notice about your own place...

I love the potted wheatgrass and the dining/bar area. Since you're clamouring for criticism, I'll add that I'm not too keen on the color of your bedroom walls, or that lamp. I do like a good reading chair, though!

Thanks Edan!
This is just what I need to inspire my S/O to help me repaint ;) I'm tired of the lavender...
The chair is ancient (and ugly, and ripped to shreds by my cat) but it's comfy---so it's draped until I can afford to re-cover...
And I've had my doubts about that lamp, too...Beware buying lamps from a catalog!

Criticism.... don't like the bedroom wall color (personal preferences) or the lamp shade but love the lamp. Umm.. Umm... Sorry - that's all I could come up with :-). I love your space. Want to move in. Now. Especially since it's cloudy, cold and windy here.

What color could I do in the bedroom?
The headboard is a crazy sort of Mad Hatter-ish tufted moss green velvet (same as the drapes, but the color is off on my monitor), and I have a big, rather baroque gold framed mirror on the floor in the corner...Bedside lamps are white..
The bed has an attachment to the headboard that creates a place to hang curtains...
The bedroom was essentially mine from when I lived alone (Alice-in-Wonderland meets Jeanie's bottle was my inspiration),
but Nico is all about sleek and modern...
I doubt with all the fierce competition you'll get to see any more photos, so I'm going to pick all of your brains while I can!! :)

LouLou - what about a warm brown color? Somethng like what's right in the middle of the throw on the bed? Everything that's in there now would still 'go'.

LouLou--
What I think would be crazy swanky for the bedroom would be to paint it *exactly* the same color as the drapes. Things like the white ginger jars and the white-framed pics will really look great on that dark sexy green.
Lower and tighten your art, and tighten your furniture (lamp closer to chair, chair closer to table, etc.)
And I have a feeling that living room could have been photographed to better advantage... LOVE the combination of elements in it.

I'd switch the bed with the dresser, and put the chair by the window. And I guess I'm the only one who would take the bedroom lighter. Maybe even a warmish white, to go with the green. Everything you have, from the gold frame to the white vase, would stand out nicely with that. Then I'd cover the chair in maybe a deep muted purple of the same saturation as the green. - But really, I'd be tempted to start with a completely fresh color scheme, changing all curtains, rods, lamps, and headboard, and go with Nico's "all about sleek and modern"....

Thankyouthankyou!!
I love this idea!! O.K., not to sound like a total suck-up, but I was really hoping you would chime in patrick (t.o.o.)...
You're sort of the Simon Cowell of AT (meaning your critiques are right AND helpful)...
I may have my weekend project :)
O.K., what about a pop of color in the LR?
I painted the Louis XVI chair persimmon recently, and put a square canvas of the same color on top of the mantel, but it isn't totally working...(painted to see the color--before I can actually recover)...I wanted to use this color in the hallway, too (what ever color it turns out to be), but again, persimmon and that green is a little too much like neon Christmas...

Thanks Sea--Yes, eventually we would like to re-do the whole thing (need $$)
It's actually french doors, not a window so I don't like to block the egress...the "dresser" is actually an old fashioned linen cabinet, only 10" deep--(cast off of a past roommate)
oceandreamer56, the wall in the LR with the mirrors is chocolate brown, as are the window coverings, so not sure about "all brown, all the time"...
Thank you all so much for taking the time to look and respond!!

LouLou,
Actually I did mean the window - that's on the right side of the drawing, opposite the interior bedroom doorway, right? But maybe the chair wouldn't fit there anyway. Mainly, the idea was to get the bed itself away from a) blocking the interior entrance visually and b) seeming about to slide right straight out those french doors.
And it's funny you mentioned your persimmon efforts - that's exactly the sort of color I was thinking you might like, and - since it wouldn't go with the green - I was about to suggest you redo your bedroom accents in persimmon and a warm soft orange.

Hmmmm....Interesting...But then wouldn't the bed itself be blocking the doors? (I may have to move things around tomorrow to see if this works)
:o)
Yep, I have been looking at all things persimmon-y, but right now my poor louis chair looks like an orange safety beacon! Not exactly what I was after!

I really like many things about this space. Thank you for sharing it.
And since you ask for suggestions...
Not sure what others would think but: I would paint the bedroom walls something closer to the color of the fireplace or the concrete counter in the kitchen. I'd also want a different green for the curtains and I'd find a different lamp.
And while the living room is soothing I'd at least add colour and texture (thinking judy ross and looola pillows) with pillows and a throw.
Thinking about a color that will work with the persimmon chair.

Hmm, Simon Cowell... hopefully not *exactly* like that!
Actually, I prefer "the Kelly Clarkson of Smallest Coolest." :)
If the persimmon is more orange/coral-ly than red, I think it would work. Also look at the chrome-yellow accents in two of the other entries (#30 Ron's Hotel 'Sweet' and the other one, which I can't find, that had yellow pillows in front of a yellow painting) as a "third priority" color.
