apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#5 Jamie's One Bedroom Bungalow

Name: Jaime
Location: Costa Mesa, CA
Size & Type: 400 sq. ft. 1-bedroom

Favorite resource: Ikea, World Market, Target, Blueprint magazine, Instyle Home.

Pitch:When I first saw this little bungalow I knew I had to have it. Compared to the cookie cutter Mediterranean style apartments of Orange County this little gem had a Cape Cod feel all over it. It's perfect for one person The lighting is great and the layout couldn't be more simple. I wanted to go with a minimalist look with a pinch of relaxed beach style since I'm just a mile from the ocean. Storage was a bit of a challenge, but in the end everything fit perfectly in the space.

Your favorite element:

Favorite element in my place is the fireplace. Although it's a working gas fireplace, I chose to put a glass candle chandelier inside versus the typical grouping of candles.

I love the art in your bedroom! Wow... stunning!

I too love the art over your bed.

I feel like I'm not seeing enough though. Less cropping would have helped me to see the whole space better and get an idea of how you've brought it all together.

Definately could have nixed the kitchen pic and subbed in something prettier!
But cool because a good friend of mine lives in Costa Mesa

The art is amazing and adds the needed personality into the apartment.

I love the bedroom, and the living room is very tasteful. Not sure what you've done with the kitchen, doesn't live up to the rest of it.

Beautiful! I love the art above the bed and the simple color scheme throughout.
I also have that weird cut-out in my kitchen wall for the fridge. The only thing I could suggest would be to put some sort of divider, or curtain, or something, because it looks like you can see your stove jutting out into your living area... but overall I think its really pretty.

I like everything I'm seeing here, but I'm loving everything around that fireplace.

Yeah, I wasn't sure which pics to post. Perhaps in hindsight I should have done more of the space versus the kitchen. Re: the cropping, actually the photos aren't cropped at all that was the most I could fit in the photo and I was standing in the corner of the room. :o)

I think an area rug in the living room would warm up your space a little.

Love your use of black & white in the living room. Have you thought of painting your kitchen?

Re: painting. I'd like to, but I just assumed the landlord wouldn't let me. I'll have to ask about that. I'd love to put color up on the walls.

Jaime, great painting over the bed, and I like that fireplace! I'm moving to a bungalow too on the West Side early next month. Are you Eastside or West? Check out my place:

Hey Kyle, I should be welcoming you to the neighborhood.;o)Costa Mesa is great, good choice! I'm on the Eastside. You're place is amazing. Very nice and modern. Are you planning on decorating your pad like how it is in the photos or is that your decor already?

Hey Jaime, well I could try to do it like they did, but I'd have to get rid of some furniture :-). That's the model unit. You're invited to a housewarming party next month!

I want your fireplace so bad!!! And the art over the bed is so luxurious. Wonderful job in such a small space!

You did a great job working with the space you have, and I think the power of your presentation is in the details. I love it! And I love seeing Gotham in the pic!

I really love the painting above your bed, it's just what I've been looking for. Do you mind if I ask where you got it or who the artist is? Thanks so much!

Great job on the focus around your fireplace! The textures and tones combine quite comfortably. I especially like the filigree complements. Is that coordinating black with white collar kitty cat live or the perfect schmooze to match the velvet sofa texture?

The bedroom pic is so dark it appears drab. Perhaps additional or more intense blue accents tying into the graphic hanging above the bed would provide some liveliness.

I have totally seen that bedroom print before, but I can't think where, and it's driving me crazy! Please tell us, Jamie!

The art over the bed isn't a print or painting. It's fabric. Available here:

Kitty!
Haha, in all seriousness, I love the living room- the emphasis on black & white with the neutral couch is cool, and really lets the fireplace and the chandelier take center stage.

The first picture is striking - lots of personality. The art above your bed goes great with your bedspread. The last picture - of the kitchen - is too bland to comment on.
