apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Southwest #30: Jordan's Ordo Ab Chao

Name: Jordan
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Size: 412 sq. ft. apartment
Rent/Own: Rent

What is the advantage of SMALL? Efficiency. My apartment back in New York was so small, I could watch TV, do some light typing, make breakfast, and answer the door all from the comfort of my toilet.

What's your favorite resource for your home?

The dumpster. Although, saying it like that makes me sound like some roving lunatic. Whatever. One man's trash is another man's modern living solution.

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home?

I suppose it would be more respectable to say the cleverly-planned closet-cum-bedroom, but.. I'm a guy. It's the 106-inch [movie] screen, obviously.

I really dig this place. I especially enjoyed the funny description. The movie screen is AWESOME.

the schematic of your apt. is very helpful. nice job, but don't you worry about those pieces above your doorway crashing down in an earthquake? though come to think of it, so will everything else so i guess it doesn't matter. i lived through the last one and crunched on broken jars of honey, beans and cereal in my kitchen for quite some time!

I'm okay with it, but then I read the owner's comments of this place, I liked it more. It is definitely a very functional place in such a small space, however, rather than other contestant's "living big", I felt very constrained especially by bedroom, I almost felt that I couldn't breathe. The other area showed a lot of creativity and I'm sure you are capable to do it better in the bedroom. I voted "cool" for those credits.

I'm not crazy about the office and dining spaces being switched. Although I suppose the natural light in the kitchen is the reason. Also, please find a way to mount the projector...ceiling, wall, post, something.

I love the bed in the closet because then its not the focus of your living space. Also, like the art hung with clips in the dining area and the nude in the living room. Normally, I like some color in the bathroom but I like that the shower curtain lets the natural light in.

The floor plan drawings show a shelf behind the couch and a chair that I don't see in the photos....great drawings though, very helpful.

Wow, what a response. Thanks to everyone.

This will actually my first post on AT ever. To answer a few questions so far:

JenJen -- RE: Bedroom/Closet -- Yes. My [so not a] bedroom was originally a walk-in closet.

BB -- RE: Picture Ledges/Earthquake -- I'm not too worried. The picture ledges hang *over* the doorways and, as we all know, the safest place to be during an earthquake is *inside* a doorway.

Bumblebeechicago -- RE: Storage -- There is a second, smaller closet off the front door where I put my stuff. Though it is not a junkpile, it will definitely not be photographed.

Jen_G -- RE: Blanket over couch -- Thank you! My Great Grandmother quilted the afghan/blanket and the throw on my Eames lounger is from my other great grandmother. Both are hiding the very poor condition of the furniture underneath them.

Enamoranda -- RE: Floor Plan -- I apologize. I should have clarified that the bottom image was my 'concept drawing' and the top drawing is the actual, this-is-how-the-place-turned-out floor plan.

La Loca -- RE: Is that Beck and Thom Yorke? -- Yes, along with many other personal literary, musical, and artistic heroes.

SD913 -- RE: Where are your clothes? -- There's a built-in armoire/vanity table next to the bed (unpictured) that came with the apartment.

SD913 -- RE: Coffee table -- This is actually one of those 20 dollar Ikea coffee tables. I painted it white, then cut a piece of wood panelling to size and liquid-nailed it to the top.

Aneta -- Thank you, that's exactly what I was going for -- Unpretentious. I felt I had achieved this when my poker buddies looked up from their Budweisers and said, "Dude. I really like your apartment."

Kellylj -- RE: All white -- Painting the walls is against my lease and I definitely need my deposit back.

Elizabeth II/Enamorada -- There's a ceiling fan that prevents mounting the projector, but I do agree with you and am planning an alternate solution. And no, it does not produce MST3K silhouettes -- I cracked up at that.

Weasel Dearest -- RE: Is that The Third Man? -- Yes, but, who is The Third Man?

Brookejoy -- RE: Is that booze on the heater/ac? -- Yes. Yes it is.

Once again, thanks to all who voted.

-Jordan

This place has a comfortable, clean look. I like the wood floors and simple white walls. I don't think the bed looks too cramped...it's cozy.

I really like this! I like how it feels indulgent even in a small space. Big bed in a closet. A full size desk next to the kitchen makes an office area that blends well with the kitchen, especially the stainless steel (?) of the desk blends with the steel accents in the kitchen. Love the whiteboard, good for office, good for kitchen. And love the huge projector screen, again very indulgent in the small space, and unlike a big flat screen, you can put it away. I think this should be a finalist.

I think you're in love with JORDAN, not his apartment...I don't see any great design here...Just some 20 something's temporary abode...making an alter out of your television qualifies as Great Design? The projector is sitting on the table, folks! If that's Wild Turkey, Jack Daniels and Johnny Walker Red on that heater, then Jordan should be spanked and put to bed without his supper for ruining good alcohol. Obviously he doesn't deserve to drink the good stuff yet if he treats it like that. That bathroom couldn't be blander, and the kitchen has no personality at all...You've all gone mad, hoping for a date with Jordan, because he sounds like a charming badboy...Just what every girl (and gay man) wants.

You know what Jordan, this is all just a little popularity contest, so you may just win--But don't give up your day job to start designing Just Yet.

DahliaCactus -- RE: Send pictures? -- I'd be honored to look at photos of 'all your shit'. Send away.

HarmonyFrance -- RE: Any tips for keeping the bathroom from looking dingy? -- Mine is a bit scuzzy, too. One tip: Take wide photos.

KidMoe -- RE: Wardrobe location? -- There is a built-in wardrobe/vanity between the bed and the bathroom door, but it is not visible in the photos.

Nicolewis -- RE: Couch from Urban Outfitters? -- Actually this is a used sofa bed from Craigslist. Good luck with the UO sofa though, let us know how it is. I'm curious about their quality, myself.

I love everything about this apartment. The bednook is cozy. I like how the desk is at the end of the kitchen. The whole layout and decor is fabulous. Super cool!

I am indeed in love with the apartment and Jordan and gave him super cool for it. He had me with the pink afghan. Totally adorable. It's the kind of place you want to move into because it doesn't look like it's straight out of a magazine but is still put together. Great job!

It's not necessarily envy that motivates the negative comments--It's the perception that an entry is getting votes for some other reason than good design.
Although I think Jordan's place looks comfortable, and definitely somewhere I would like to hang out and watch a movie and drink a beer (or three), I don't think it is the best designed space--the art in livingroom and kitchen/work space is hung so high that you really can't appreciate it much, and I have to agree that the bathroom doesn't look like much has been done to it. It also kind of looks like a doormat on the floor? I think the apt. needs a rug to warm up the place, and (sorry Jordan's grandmo) that crocheted afghan has got to go.
The bedroom/closet idea (one we've seen before on this site) just doesn't appeal to me--too claustrophopic and Harry Potter-ish, and if the only clothes closet is on the other side of the apt., then it's not very practical.
Nice 3-D drawings, but a little confusing since some of the stuff drawn isn't in the apt.
Definitely not super cool, and not the best designed space I've seen by far--but nonetheless, it's a cool little hang.

Nada - nothing - there is nothing to this.

Nice, but I don't like how the bed's crammed in there.
