What is the advantage of SMALL? We love living small! A big advantage is being thoughtful and deliberate in designing our space since these are pieces, pictures, cherished mementos that we see, live in and around every day and night.

What's your favorite resource for your home?

We live in a 1-bdrm apartment and think of our rooms as a mixed space. We have a long rectangular main room so we created a family room on one side and a dining room on the other side. We turned our eat-in-kitchen into an office. We took time to plan our space and it really works for us.

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home?

We love our floor-to-ceiling windows in our main room. We face east so we get awesome morning sunshine.

I'm loving the black/white/red combo.

I like the style, however all the photos seemed to be of the family room.

I really like it. You've got some great pieces in there I'd love to get my hands on! Nice job on a space that looks like it might lack good bones.

The living room looks great, but I want to see the rest of the apartment!

i like the combination of styles very much -- but it seems like all the modern west elm-looking pieces are are on one wall and all the vintage pieces are on the other. i'd love to see them mixed up better in the room! also, additionally i think there is too much visual weight on the red-wall side with the dark sofa and the big pictures. all the elements are great just think they could be rearranged more dynamically.

I would have really liked to have seen more of the apartment like the bedroom and kitchen, so unfortunately, its only a cool for me.

It has a casual feel, and pieces seem to have intention; I liked it a lot except I think the red wall is too dark. Maybe it is lighter in person than in photo, but I thought it unbalanced the room. I think I got a pretty good feel for the decor throughout by pics taken from the living room so that doesn't bother me as much.

What is the most attractive about this space is that it is at once both dramatic and comfortable - and the black and white photography with the zebra ottomans and the mirror really pops that beautiful red wall.

I agree with domesticfashionista, you've done *a lot* with some pretty bland bones.

Would have loved to see the bedroom.

eh. not to be a jerk, but i don't think it is interesting or stylish. i don't like the mixmosh of types of furnishings or the decor selections. just run of the mill, though perfectly fine. just not for a contest.

I'd like to see a closeup of those two frames with what looks like photos or contact sheets in them. What are they?
Also, where'd you get the large image of a city?

I really like this apartment, it has a real presence and a distinct sense of style. Love the red and the b/w photography, and I'm dead envious of that gorgeous sideboard. I would like to have seen the bedroom, kitchen and or bathroom too, but this is a really good start.

A note about the photography - the pics in the 2 large frames are all b/w pictures I personally took when I lived in NY. The large canvas of the flat iron building can be found at IKEA.

I thought I had submitted pics of the bedroom. You can kind of see it through the doorway of the main room - white/brown/blue are the colors.

The red wall is lighter in person - it's Yolo House paint, which is eco-friendly zero VOCs.

Thanks for all the comments! Very appreciated!

I really want to like this apartment, but I just can't seem to muster up that much enthusiasm for it. I like the direction but no. Each wall has something crammed up against it, YIKES! I think that the owner should take the storage upwards instead of across. Meaning, instead of that entertainment unit and buffet, a nice tall book case or unit with doors/drawers and a place for the TV might be better. And as much as I hate to say it, too much art on the walls (or maybe not strategically placed). This apartment needs therapy.

I had a red wall very similar to that color for like 6 months until I felt it was kinda cliche. But if you're going to do one dark wall in a room, it needs to be balanced. The dark wall should be at the end of the room (center, etc.), not to one side of the room. Join again next year after the apartment has gotten some therapy (and that's not meant to be mean, but constructive).

I looovvveee the red. Really can't go wrong with black-red-white. That's the color I want for our bedroom! I wish there had been pics from the bedroom and the kitchen (seems like a fun idea, kitchen/home office -mixed space... )

Could you tell me more about the paint? It's Yolo, but which shade?

Would have liked to see the kitchen and bedroom to get more of a feel for the place. I liked what I saw though, just wish I could have seen more. I vote cool.

This one ALMOST does it for me, but then it just falls flat. It looks like you have all the right pieces but the layout needs to be reconsidered. That deco-era mirrored credenza seems a bit out of sorts in the space. It's a GREAT piece but it has a lot of personality and needs space to be its own. It's overpowering the other furniture because of proxmity and the relationship to the other furniture is just strange.

Does anyone else remember that issue of Domino where the girl painted her wall heater and part of the wall around it black? It made it totally disappear. I cant help but want to do that to the back wall of the living room here, although it would cut down on the natural, reflected light.

What do you think?

I liked how you used the kitchen nook as your office area and how you placed your dining table in the living room but overall I can't get myself to understand why it's not working for me.

Very Bev Hills without being over done. I quite like your choices. Palette is good, however the apartment looks dark - it may just be the time of day photos were shot.
Nice job.
