What is the advantage of SMALL? I'm not sure if there is necessarily an advantage to small, but it does make you rethink how you can do things. You have to get creative with how you organize and, in our case, the things I make for the home. You also have less you can put in it, so the less you have to buy, and the more you have to spend on essentials (like food and vacation). The apartment is more than enough for us, though. We will soon be moving to New York, so I guess that the small home is a good boot camp for the even smaller home we will have in NY.

What's your favorite resource for your home?
We like thrift stores, Ikea, Home Depot (for wood for me to make stuff with), eBay and craigslist.
What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home?
Well, besides each other or our pup, all of the custom things I have made for the home. I have made my girlfriend and I custom sized desks to fit just right in our areas. I also have made a custom coffee table, and coat rack (because we couldnt find one we liked that we could afford). We also have a couple dressers we got from the thrift store that we repainted and made them look awesome. That's more than one thing, but it is more the idea I am talking about I guess.

I didn't get anything from these pictures. The only thing I saw was a dog. None of the space was shown.

Where did you get that lounge? I like it!

Definitely commendable that you have custom built your own furniture. There is a simplicity to your home which is like a breath of fresh air.

You posted 3 pictures of just your furniture. I assume you are really proud of them, and you should be because they are unique, but I just do not think they are appropriate photographs for us to be able to vote properly. From the sole picture showing how you laid out your furniture and used your space, I did not see anything interesting, and for that, I voted you down. Sorry.

I don't get it. Probably because you didn't show us enough to get much of anything. I know the contest calls for a vignette photo, but come on. We get NOTHING from either of those table views. This space looks well-organized, but it hasn't been designed. And once again, wall art that is ALL THE SAME SIZE!!! ARGGGGGGHHH!!!!!

I like what I can see - but I wish we could see full-room shots of more than just the living room. So, just "cool" from me.
Love that bedside table!

Even though I agree with all the comments about not showing enough of your actual apartment, I still had to vote cool b/c I love your furniture. But seriously, couldn't see any of your apartment.

Wish there were more pics with either the kitchen or bathroom. The furniture was great, but I would prefer to see how they were utilized in the space. I voted cool.

I voted cool because of the blue dresser (?) and the oh-so-cute bedside table! And the dog.
The carpet and lack of photos...blech.

DesignGod... I get your frustration but for photography collectors-- or if you are mostly displaying your own art-- there isn't much variance in size.
I think hanging work in interesting groupings that would occupy the walls in a bigger way (I'm sure there was a more coherent way to say that) is one option, but I don't think people should buy art just because "that space above the couch/bed/console calls for something big." When it comes to art: you buy what you love.

To a point, I agree saya. You are right, small pieces can be grouped together for larger impact. They shouldn't be set out on their own like abandoned milirary posts in the middle of a vast dessert. It just frustrates me because we keep seeing it over and over again. The latest Massachusetts post is the perfect example of what varation of sizes can do for a wall, or even just one big move.

Completely agree with the others on the lack of photos of the rooms themselves, except for the living room, which does a good job of showing what you did in that space, but what about the bedroom, the kitchen or bathroom?
I did note the pictures and noted that some of them were too high, especially some of the ones over the couch and much of the furniture was up against the walls, a chair at an angle to the couch would help to visualy divide space a little, otherwise, a very good effort was taken to make the place liveable.

I voted "super cool" mainly because I want to see more of this space. I agree, I'd like more overall shots, but I think what we've seen so far is amazing, especially for a rental.

hey guys, this is my place lol. i assure you i took more pictures, but when you go to submit to the contest it asks for specific pictures (over view, detail, and 3 other pics of my choosing). i did take a pic of the kitchen, sort of. we really just live in our living room and sleep an cook in the others, so we focus on the living room lol.
aloo, thanks for the tips on the photos! we are trying to figure out how to reorganize them... and they are photos i took.
and the lounge, i made :)

at last... a dog! and a dog on a pink chaise lounge to boot.

Hi Thopunk.
I really like your fearlessness of color. Considering what I saw of your place, one needs it to live comfortably. And the lounge is a great custom-made piece.
But I think you could have gone further with reigning in the scale. In my opinion, the furniture seems too small for the living room. Or it could be that having the furniture mostly against the wall distorts my perception of the living room's scale. It just feels too empty.
However I'd love to see what you'll do in NY.

Major movie theatre syndrome going on.
The chaise longue by the window is too bare and alone. Is it really a comfortable place to sit? Why not incorporate it into the sitting room area? That would be a start to diffusing the movie theatre effect. Also, while the fabric does look great, cover it partially with something soft and complementary... either a squishy (velvet?) cushion or a thick throw or sheepskin or something.
I don't find that the desks look like comfortable workspaces either, but take this with a grain of salt because I think I'm pickier than most people when it comes to desks and workplaces.
I think that it would be a lot more visually appealing, after the sitting room area is made into a real sitting room, to put one long table or two longish tables side by side along the window, and nice gauzy-ish curtains or roman shades over the windows to reduce glare. The curtains/cloth shades would help even if you don't set up the desks like that.
Clearly you guys have great style and taste, especially when it comes to color, but I think you are not being choosy and deliberate enough, especially when it comes to furniture placement. Take it a few steps further.
And finally, too many knicknacks in some areas, ie over the blue dresser.
And finally finally, there's no pic of your bedroom, but if the floor plan is fairly accurate, you might move things around there too--one side of the bed looks sorta stuck, with very little space at the foot of the bed. Perhaps you could move the dresser to the other wall.

"Super Cool"
Still needs fine tuning, but you guys are on the right track.
view martita's profile
You guys did an excellent job and I'm envious of your ability to make furniture. Feel free to mix it up in your space, tho. I felt like all of your pieces were shoved to the perimeter, and I think you've got such great furniture to play with. So play, won'tcha?
view darcidoodle's profile
I agree with darcidoodle. Some very interesting elements. But the living room furniture could be re-arranged in a much more interesting way, rather than at straight up against the walls. You have plenty of room to play around and try a more angled approach, or to create more intimate conversation areas. This being said, I voted Cool!

I think this is the first time I've seen his and hers workstations in the same apartment.
Those pictures above the window are not level and would bug the crap out of me. Otherwise, not a bad place.

I absolutely love the painted furniture - the hot pink and the blue!

Did you paint the furniture yourself? I love them!

I love your color palette--it's fresh without being overly sweet. I think this is really nice work for a rental, but I do wish there had been more overview photos.

thanks guys! we painted the dresser and side drawer thing. they were ugly thrift store finds, but we loved the shape. dresser was $15, side thing was $12.

cool bedside table.
otherwise, the place falls flat.
The living room is so depressing.
Pull the furniture away from the walls;
reconfigure it and make it feel like a place you want to hang out in. look for a decent coffee table. get rid of the 'area' rug.
Create a zone for the desk/work area.
