apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Southwest #28: Kim's Treetop Nest

Name: Kim
Location: Venice, CA
Size: 475 sq. ft. apartment
Rent/Own: Rent

What is the advantage of SMALL? As the saying goes, "You can't take it with you!" Living in a small space helps me to strike a healthy balance as a consumer. Since I know that I have a small dwelling, I am pretty discerning about what I buy and how I reuse what I have.

Living here in my cozy nest, I don't feel burdened with maintaining many rooms of furniture and stuff. It frees me up to pursue my creative interests and just live my life!

What's your favorite resource for your home?

When I travel, I tend to find (small) cool objects at flea markets, art studios and street fairs. I also shop at good ol' standbys like Ikea, Cost Plus, Anthropology, Target (believe it or not!), Olvera Street, ABC Carpets in NYC, Indigo in Minneapolis etc. And I read Dwell, the LA Times, fashion magazines, and sites online like this one...

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home?

My folk art. I've been collecting pieces for several years. Now that the word is out, friends and family members love to give me masks and crafts for my collection--which is a challenge, since my space is petite!

I was in love with your place - the vibrant colors and pieces collected from your travels...

...until I got to the (admittedly, cleverly gussied-up and tidy) stark-white computer desk and Office Depot chair - That was a let down.

I love the collections of folk art-objects--the masks and the crosses are fantastic! I think the work area is very clever--I like the way you've used the storage covers as bulletin boards--And your sweet pussy cat looks like he likes being in your nest too!

It's hard to tell if the decorating is great, or are we all being seduced by the incredible windows and great beams. It is gorgeous, though.

I love the overall look of the space, the building is my cup o tea in that it looks like it's a modern dwelling, infused with a folksy charm from your travels.

Love the cathedral beamed ceiling, very nice. It may be small, but it feels like it's larger than it is.

Well done

This one really appeals to me. Not that I want to copy it but it is so full of life and personality - I want to come for dinner with a really good bottle of wine and hear the trip tales that go with your collections. Lovely place!

The desk seems out of character but everything else is vibrant and fun and makes me want to move to California right this second.

What an evocative space! I don't mind the white desk, it looks like you're serious about your work and let's face it -- many creatives begin with a white canvas.
You've brought the world into your treetop nest. I love the masks, crosses, furniture and best of all - the light!!! What an exotic little oasis. Good luck, it's a winner!

It's not my style, but I couldn't help but love it. If this is about genius planning in a small space, you win! The kitchen was the high point for me.

I give it a Super Cool, even though I hate the living. The cupboards and wicker seems so out of place with the rest...

It would bother me if guests had to go through my bedroom to get to the bathroom.

The crosses in every room freak me out

Not my bag BUT I voted "cool". I like the symetry, the coordination of objects and furniture, the color palate. The place looked lived in but beautifully designed. I love it.

So warm and luxurious....until you get to the desk.

What's this saying about your relationship to your work and computer...?

I love the architecture of this space but find the decorating choices especially the bedroom and the work area to be rather disapointing.

I loved the first pic but then nothing after that. The place is great but much of the decorating is odd to me. Didn't like the bedroom and didn't like that grass/twig mirror thing. The first pic with the red and the yellow was great and the place seemed to ask for a different style than what you did. But overall still nice.

Thanks for all of your comments--compliments & criticisms alike! As many of you know, living in a small space is all about creating harmony & balance with less square footage.

Throughout my space I have incorporated several storage solutions for stowing my stuff and simplifying the rooms, which helps to make the space look bigger than it is.

I have covered the glass doors of my Billy bookcases with rice paper to hide all of my books. And placed mono chromatic baskets above for additional light weight storage.

With regards to my studio area, I really have made the most of my off white Plummer desk. I created fabric covered bulletin board cubby hole storage covers (with suede pulls) to hide a fax machine, a printer etc. inside. Down below, I created removable muslin panels that conceal, a lot of equipment, books and supplies. It is much easier on the eyes, than if everything were exposed.

Although the desk is not a showpiece (and some of you have had opinions), it does serve as a neutral space to create on. And it blends with my iMac. When I buy a place, I'll get my dream desk.

Thanks for your feedback!

You know, I like how you did the cubby doors, clever! I think the desk space would look way better if you'd used some color/pattern instead of the white muslin. I mean 'way better' as in it would look more like it belonged to your space. Now it looks like it just landed there is all...

Really though, it's such a cozy and green space - like somebody really lives there, and I haven't had the feeling from most of the entries in this contest. Kudos!

Lots of color and personality, a very vibrant and alive-feeling space. Gorgeous! Had to laugh at the horseshoe tucked in with the religious icons... covering all the bases? :)

Great space and very much a super-cool in my book!

This looks beautiful, earthy but not crunchy, warm and inviting but not so personal you feel intrusive. The greenery and sunlight really makes the place stand out.

The transformation of a dreary loft to a vibrant colored oasis! Maximum use of space to incorporate the necessities, but with the inclusion of special mementos to give it your personal signature. BRAVO!

To: buzzybee re: cubby panels

Thanks for the suggestion! I did try a different fabric before going with the muslin for the cubby panels, but it just didn't work. But I may give a more vibrant textile another go. Also a plan in the works to reupholster my black desk chair with a lively fabric.

Cheers,

I love everything about this place! Great colors, interesting collections and very warm and personal. The location with all the gorgeous greenery outdoors is icing on the cake. I like stuff and organized clutter (not saying this place is cluttered...). This is my style and voted super cool. One of my favorite entries.
