apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Southwest Finalist #3: Jordan's Ordo Ab Chao

Name: Jordan
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Size & Type: 412 sq. ft. apartment rental
Original Entry: Click Here

Who was your favorite entry and why?

Tony and Hilary's 3-in-1 is just about as perfect as an apartment can get. It's not much larger than my own place yet it feels infinitely vaster. But for me, the real success of their decor is how designer'ish it looks without being uptight. That is to say, I feel like they'd probably be cool about it if I accidentally forgot to use a coaster.

What's your next improvement?

My downstairs neighbor's complaints about my noise has provided all the justification I need to buy area rugs. After that though, unless I stumble across any garbage pearls, I've got to take some time off from home improvement -- I've blown too much dough as it is. Besides, I think it'll be nice to enjoy my place instead of nitpicking what's left to be done with it.

Putting your Mac to good use with a great video! Wonderful touches everywhere: the fan over the desk, the bed nook... Love the poster in the kitchen. Very well done.

Love the shelves above the doors, the bed-closet, just the general layout. And that print in the kitchen is great!

Nice place! Love what you've done with it.

The kitchen/eating area kind of reminds me of a kitchen I once had, except that it was a galley kitchen with a single wall of cupboards/counter and a ceiling tall cabinet and then the fridge and stove and not much else and it was quite original too, like yours.

Although I didn't utilize my dining area for an office, I did have a large long rectangular room that allowed me to have a living area and den area so it worked out pretty well overall.

What's the building outside your window? It looks like that building Ronald Reagan lived in when he first came to Hollywood. The buidling I'm thinking of is on Franklin but east of Highland.

If you don't win for the apartment, you should get some kind of prize for best expresssion of personality in your survey answers and video.

Loulou & Nico -- I'm in. Believe it or not, in the two years I've lived in LA, I've never once been to Venice. Now I have no excuse. (And, of course, you're more than welcome to come hang in Koreatown)

I love Koreatown--except for the all-eel-all-the-time restaurants...EEK!

Shoot me an email, and we'll have you over cocktails dahlink.

Still my fantasy movie-watching den! And if that's a photo of Anna Karina over the door, I give your entry an extra gold star...

Why, yes, as a matter of fact, it is Anna Karina.

Wow! Love, love, love how individual you place is. I have to know, how did you mount that fan over your desk? I have one similar that I have wanted to put up in a corner of my dining room that collects all the heat in the house. I've seen one that has a bent "neck" but it costs around $800. How oh how did you do it?

Your apartment reflects such personality. So nice to see a guy who takes pride in their place. I'll marry you. : )

Yay! The video is great too... your place looks so crashable. It's fun to play spot the faces in the art on your walls. tiny Thom Yorke and tiny Beck?

I see more chaos than order. This place is a mess. There's stuff everywhere, what's up with the marker boards - that's just bad, personal perhaps, but not at all an expression of careful design. You try to be tidy - well at least in the pictures. You've laied out your space well and it looks like it's comfortable. But not worthy of comparison to some of the other entries.

I accept!

Of course, I'll have to give up my singing career in Paris, but you won me over with the whiskey on the radiator and the Duchamp urinal pic in the can. It'll be like the early days with Jean-Luc...

Questions -- Answered!

Weasel Dearest -- RE: the building outside my window -- No idea, but I'm in Ktown, so it's probably not the building you're thinking of.

LucyBell -- RE: fan over the desk -- It's an old GE that just happened to have a hanger clip welded on the base.

Marisajane -- RE: Tiny Thom Yorke and tiny Beck -- Yes it is. From bottom left: Tiny Billy Wilder, Ira Glass, Picasso, Truman Capote, Orson Welles, Tennessee Williams, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, [you'll only feel better when it's done], [keep going], Jeffrey Eugenides, Preston Sturges, Richard Avedon, Beck, Paddy Chayefsky, Thom York, Vonnegut's Asshole

Anna,

You got my obscure Duchamp reference. Let us run away together immediately.

That building looks so familiar from your kitchen window. I thought it was the Eastern Columbia in Downtown, but you're in K-Town. It's the building 1 block west of the Wiltern, right? Cool place! Good Luck!

Oh, don't tempt me...

On a more objective note, I love the idea of putting up pics of one's idols in nice frames -- I've been thinking of doing something similar myself. (Easy to consider Billy Wilder and Orson Welles family.)

Good luck with the contest tonight! And with that screenplay you seem to be plotting out.

Forever,
Anna

I liked the phrase 'garbage pearls' most of all. The video was fun too. I think this is my favorite.

If I were single and you brought me back to your place for a date, I would be seriously tempted to fall for you. Damn, what a cool place. And you don't seem pretentious.

Re: otherose's comment, I don't get it, I don't see any chaos.

Jeez, there's quite a line between creative order and just being OCD anal.

Criminy.

if you live w/ that howard beale image all the time you should win the cash and it should go towards therapy!

that said, it's really the 'office' area that makes the place. love the combo of portraits and words (and that fan!) to support your work. And the portraits nicely complement all the figurative drawing all around the apartment. They help pull the apartment together for me.
