It's funny, though ... I was thinking about Matthew's place, and I swear that if it was a girls' place, it wouldn't have done as well. Everyone would be all "you're so immature to have a kermit phone!" whereas with a guy it's sweet. Oh well. I still think it's the best!

I really liked Matthew's place. The floor plan alone is a winner.

Kelly & Josh's place was lovely but I don't think they took full advantage of all the space they have layout wise.

No question that Loulou and Nico's Duplex is divine. Next would be Jordan, Kelly and John then Matthew's spaces.

Wow - these spaces are all so great - I can hardly even decide how to rank them. I really love Loulou and Nico's space but I'm so impressed that the other spaces which are all renters are almost equally as awesome. I think you should get extra credit for being a renter in this contest or just a separate category because it's such a challenge! Eliminating the renting vs. owning thing, I guess I would say

matthew--- quick on the draw! i saw that it's a sofa bed on your floor plan pic. and i commend you for moving your stuff around every night to go to sleep. even sans an actual BED bed... i still really dig your space! :)

I was sitting there for a week after I submitted my entry, refreshing constantly, sweating if I would even make it onto the site. Now I'm a semi-finalist. Heavy. Many thanks to all involved in making that happen.

I've already started some changes based the feedback I received. Totally an illuminating experience. Looking forward to two weeks from now.

I'm so happy to see Jordan's space in this round. I looked at the Northwest Finalists a little earlier and got confused, how could this be?

I'm pretty happy with this set, unlike the midwest and east sets; also the northwest is ok (now that I've straightened out what I've misread), but I didn't have any serious favorites in the whole lot there.

I have a contest question - are the National Winners chosen from the regional finalists or is that a second group?

Nevermind, I figured it out. Regional winners may also win the National prizes.

I really want to see what they have all done to accommodate living in a small space (not that I consider Josh & Kelly's actually small)...
I don't really like either Matt's or Jordan's...They both look very "I'm just out of college"/ juvenile, (but that's probably why they're so popular).

It's funny, but I like two a lot from this group such that it's hard to rank #1. I really like Matthew's place, but the bike in the kitchen still squicks me out, and Josh and Kelly's bathroom rocks despite it's strange layout, so for working with an odd space very well, I'd say:

That red and pink thing that Loulou & Nico have going just makes me want to kick them out for a weekend and stay there. Everywhere you look it's just fantastic.

But basically, I think the judges did a good job of picking these four. Although honestly, I'm glad this is a big enough contest that I can't remember what other fantastic things we're missing out on in the SouthWest.

i remember thinking southwest had a ton of great entries.. my 2 favorites were #26 rachels marina vintage studio and #21 thuys rooftop cottage and deck. too bad they aren't in the running.

Robinm - You want seperate categories for renters and owners. WE. GET. IT. No need to tell us a fifth time.

If I had to rank them it would be:

2) Matthew - a close second for making a lot out of a little, but bed conversions are still a real pain when you are doing them every night, and I have issues with the bike over the stove.

Wow - At last - a group that makes it difficult to choose! Aside from the East Coast most of the groups have had one clear winner.

Hrmm.. Matts - super personal, lots of caveats to space (unfolding your bed EVERY night) yet beautiful in spite of the limitations.

LouLou & Nico - Simply stunning use of color/pattern/texture. Really the most bang for the buck!

Jordan - love the masculine vibe. It proves men can decorate/live tastelessly (something you have to keep reminding yourself when you live in a college town)

But I think my winners would have to be Josh & Kelly. While their space isnt perfect I think they would make the best use of the prize. With a little extra bump they could make that space amazing! And not just because of the weirdo configured bathroom.

I don't think judging based on "who will do most with the prize" is very fair. How do we know what any of them will do with the prize? The idea here is: who has done the most with their space already?
Based on that, Loulou and Nico are the clear winners.

LouLou & Nicoare by far the winners. They created a beautiful, sophisticated environment within an 585 sq. ft.
space.

Josh & Kelly have a structurally unique bathroom, but they had very little to do with making it so, since it's a rental. But they did do a nice job with their living room area--kudos there.

Matthew & Jordan's places look like they are "just out of college/juvenile" --I agree with you Voodoo Child. Not much style, imagination or cohesion in their spaces at all! I don't get it.
