Who Lives Here: Kiki, husband and a small baby
Location: San Diego, California
Size: 600 square feet
What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? I love the inlaid bookcase in our living room. To me books are precious, both aesthetically and intellectually. Being able to display my favorites without taking up the space of a bookcase was really invaluable.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? I recently downsized from a three bedroom house in Mexico to a one bedroom apartment condo in San Diego, CA. The hardest thing was having to pick and choose amongst all the kitschy decorations and paintings I had accumulated over the years. Living in such a small space with my husband and a small baby has made me embrace my inner claustrophobia. It has also helped honed my style. If I don't absolutely love it, it should not be taking up precious space. My current criteria is: anything added to your household should be aesthetically pleasing but moreover, functional. For example, if I need to purchase bathroom towels, I'll choose a nice set from Anthropologie instead of five white ones from Target. Now towels become an opportunity to "decorate". It's definitely quality over quantity.

Feels very spacious for a small space, and I admire the use of fun & colorful accessories & decor items on a more soothing, neutral backdrop. I would LOVE to live here!

Uh oh, you're going to get scolded for having your books arranged that way. Well thank heavens you don't have a Keep Calm poster or any visible animal pelts, so the outrage will be survivable.
I like your casual, colorful little place. It has a nice feel to it, and must be a nice place for your baby to grow up in.

The apartment itself looks much like a typical boring rental. So kudos for personalizing the space and making it colorful, fun, and inviting.

Kitchen? Bath? I'm looking for the whole package.

I love the oddball placement of the bookcase. I've never seen anything quite like it! Works so well with the desk, too. :)

Is that an altar on top of the reading table. Do I see an Indian bride and groom doll?
I like the casual mix of the colors and kitschy items. You really made sense out of it.
LOVE that green table.

Why would anyone living in a small space fill book shelves with bottles of water and tins of coke?
view hrhprincessfiona's profile
@ hrhPF:
Repetition of everyday objects creates an aesthetically pleasing arrangement, which is always a refreshing alternative to keeping cases of coke and bottled water lying around. This principle is one of the most basic lessons that we learn in design school, and it's nice to see someone employ the method in an everyday space - especially when they are most likely VERY limited on storage space for food products. Again, it looks really cool and is much better than stacked cases of soda skulking in a corner.

Love it! Wonderful colors and objects.

The best way to be "green" is to re-use and re-style. Good for you. Great colors.

And/or, fiona... possibly they just drink a lot of coke and bottled water? ;)
Love this - creative reuse with lots of color.

I love the use of color in this teeeeny space. I'd love to see some drapes or curtains on the windows!! If only to hide those hideous blinds!!
Great job with creating this otherwise boring rental into something fun!

Miss Jess, well that's me told.

Although the colours are fun and playful, this apartment has the feeling of a girl's first apartment. I'm guessing it's a rental because the walls don't match the colourful furniture and even clash with it. If it's not a rental, it would look more pulled together with a better paint colour, different carpeting or more colourful rugs and better draperies. Otherwise, it feels a bit garage sale-y to me (sorry!).

Inlaid? I was looking for something with stuff inlaid into the frame, and all the while it was the built-in. I'd extend the crown molding over the top of it. Lose the vertical blinds, too, please.
I'm guessing the baby's not walking. It's cute enough, but nothing special, although I'm sure the occupants love it.

@Kiki -
That bookcase is awesome. I used to have one of those in the house I grew up in and I had my huge desk right in front of it too. But yours is much cuter. I especially love your dining table.
@ noiseisgood
I zoomed in and yes it is an Indian bride and groom statue...more specifically Bengali bride and groom!!

I love your table!
That said... I think the under-desk area needs some work... Dangling cords? And the rug?

I like your fun unexpected splashes of color. The patina-like green table in front of the powder pink book shelf is great; and so are the mix of fabric patterns and colors of the pillows on your couch. Lots of personality! Nice job!

personally the water bottles and coke cans are what drew my eye to this one in the first place, i love them! and the green table also. and my heart goes out to anyone in such a small space with a baby, i fear for your sanity when the toys start multiplying. all the colors are so fun and playful for your baby though!

Too bad I missed the voting time! :(
I love your place - especially the table, and the chair under the magazines. Oh, I wish I could see how your Mexico home looked like...

Oh I missed the voting here too! Ah well - I love the peachy candy colors everywhere...maybe the desk should be painted in the same scheme? Overall, very funky.
I agree that living in a smaller space (or moving in with someone else) forces you to rethink all your possessions....which isn't a bad thing!

What is wrong with arranging books by color? I may agree, it some spaces it just doesn't look right. Sometimes though, it's a nice way to make a bookshelf look less cluttered.

What a fun place. While I think a bit of editing could make this a really awesome space, the colors, furniture and objects are really appealing to me. I can completely relate to the restrictions of a rental, I think Kiki has done a really good job having her personality shine through. And your colors reeled me in.
What's funny is the baby's corner is so white, especially after all of the color but it's sweet. I really, really love the paintings and frames in the corner, as well as your sari-fabric pillows. It's nice to see people showing hints of their culture throughout their home (I'm at least assuming that someone is Indian)
