Small Cool 2009: Emily's Downsize Theory
Little Division #22

thumbs up

Who Lives Here: My husband and I
Location: Dallas, Texas
Size: 750 square feet

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? That it reminds us of people we love, whether it's our dad's guitars hanging in the living room, my mom's collection of records in our media cabinet, or our grandmother's fire king in the kitchen. We can't help but be reminded of those who have helped shape us into who we are today!

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? Like many small home dwellers we were challenged by having limited storage space. This caused us to downsize significantly. Sticking to this theory has helped us in deciding what stays and what goes; we have to a) love it, b) use it, and c) need it.

Where do these woven club chairs come from? I've seen a few of them lately and really like it.

Nice place, very warm.

It is so easy for homes that display a lot of personal items to start to look cluttered and the decor doesn't seem to tie together. Not the case here! Everything looks homey and personal but also well put together and tidy with a cohesive feel. This is how I hope my home feels to my guests. I feel like I could get comfortable here!

I love this one! It looks like a very comfortable home!

I am trying to figure out if the wall color behind the desk is different from the rest of the wall, or is that just the lighting?

If you come home to find a random person just nestled in that comfy couch - its me! Ha. This place really is just so put together. Makes me want to see more photos to see how you've approached the rest of the place!

I really like your walls colors, what are they? I'm assuming the chair in pic #4 is vintage, it is really cool.

I'm trying to tell if your top kitchen cabinets (pic #1) have the molding or is it just the one above the stove, that looks really cool!

I had to get rid of my Eames chair about when guitar entered the picture. I always assumed that would be too much cool for any one person. I've been proven wrong.

Many thanks to everyone for all of your encouraging comments! Our house is always open to visitors. We think you'll feel right at home if you have an appreciation for good food, great company, cold Shiner, and Ray LaMontagne.

To answer some of your questions, we purchased our woven club chairs from World Market about four years ago.

The wall color behind the desk is the same as the rest of the living room ... it's called Rhythmic Blue. Our guest bedroom paint color is called Asparagus, and the kitchen is Portabello. We are fans of Behr and love paint colors named after food.

The chair in picture #4 is a vintage Eames that we found on Craigslist. My dear friend Molly likes to call it our ET chair. Phone home.

Our kitchen cabinets do have molding on the doors. If we could have submitted a 6th photo it would have been of our kitchen. This is one of my favorite places to spend time with Tim. Two very different cooking styles = beautiful chaos.

The shelf to the left of our stove is from Ikea. We cut off the bottom two shelves so that our trashcan would fit underneath. Not quite Ikea hack worthy, but close.

Thanks again for all of your comments and support!

scootergirl, about 5 min north of downtown. bring your vespa and some shiner.

poke, it's actually an old oak kitchen cabinet that we picked up at a flea market. there aren't any glass doors on the front, just open with a teal / light blue milk paint inside. you are from dallas? sending spiral diner love your way ... and perhaps some cafe brazil migas.

mollyhwright, you are famous now that your sigmund art on the chalkboard door is displayed for all to see. monchie's would be proud (so would lois).

abbydennis, if you're ever in dallas ...

Hsilvo, Rhythmic Blue. Our guest bedroom paint color is called Asparagus, and the kitchen is Portabello. We are fans of Behr and love paint colors named after food.
ALK*, we used string swings ... you can get them at any guitar shop, and they are easy to install.

Thanks again, to everyone who voted for us. Looks like we've made it on to the next round ...

If we win a major award like a plastic leg lamp, you all will be welcome to come view it from the street.
