Small Cool 2009: Jenny's Hawaiian Shoebox
Tiny Division #11

thumbs up

Who Lives Here: Jenny and her sister
Location: Honolulu, Hawaii
Size: 470 square feet

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? The layout. Even though our home is the size of a shoebox, it works for two sisters. The bedrooms are of equal size, divided by the bathroom, and the living area and kitchen are open and flow into each other nicely. We have our own spaces and a nice space to share. It's very comfortable and we get great cross breezes and plenty of natural light year round. The porch is a nice plus!

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? Lack of options. We live on an island with limited home furnishing resources. Think no IKEA! No Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, Anthropolgie, nothing. We did a lot of online shopping and scouring some of the few, fun local home decor shops. We also have a good collection of stuff we kept from living on the East Coast, as well as things we picked up on trips to the Mainland. A good thing about a small place is that you don't need a lot of furniture. We chose carefully, over time. Painting every room also made a huge difference in creating a serene place we love to come home to.

I'm a beige, white and black decor fanatic....so I really appreciate your use of the blend in your home. As far as the size....hey, when you are living in paradise....it's all good.

i understand tile is the best floor option for you, but the tile combined with all the uber neutral decor makes the space seem cold. i think some more pops of color would add some cheer to the space! like that red swim suit in the bathroom and your green patio chairs!

Kudos to the architect. The space is smaller than some studios, but it works, at least for two sisters with well honed negotiation skills. I agree that more color is needed, apparently. But I am not there, and perhaps the cool neutrals work best in the tropics.

What I see here is a space that deserves to win because I think the residents could do great things with the prize.

The big, blank, side of the refridgerator was my only complaint. Maybe put some plants or shelves or a poster there? The tiny little print you've got doesn't quite cut it.

Otherwise, well done and thanks for sharing your home with us.

I like the neutral color scheme, Hawaii can get pretty hot sometimes so a cool home should work better ;) Can't believe the place is less than 500sqft, nice work!
Can you please tell me where you got that pinkish blanket in the bedroom? Thanks!

Nicely done and I agree, a little more color and I find what works in climates like yours are more tropical colors of aqua, turquoise, chartreuse, coral and more intense yellows would work against a more white backdrop to bring in both color, but coolness, especially the bright greens and blues, the coral would work to offset the color more serene colors but use it as an accent to the rest.

Otherwise, a great job on using what you have and can get right there on the island.

I like how the space is used for squeezing in 2 bedrooms into less than 500 Sq Ft.

The pinkish blanket is an amazingly soft bamboo coverlet from a company called HomeSource International (in the "lotus" color). I bought it locally from a store here called SoHa. But I believe it's available online here: http://www.elitelinens.com/Bamboo%20bedding%20by%20Homesource.htm

As a fellow Honolulu resident, I think you've done a nice job with your place. I know how hard it is to make places here 'homey' because of the lack of architectural details in most apartments. And the ubiquitous, cheap ceramic tile (can you tell I have it in my rental apartment?).

I'm amazed there are two bedrooms in a space that small and that it doesn't seem totally cramped! My only complaint is that it would drive me crazy to have the side of my bed pushed up against the wall like that. I'd center it on the window instead.

Love the black and white of the curtains in the living room and the rug in the bedroom against the rest of the more neutral colors.

The color in the living room/kitchen area is Benjamin Moore's "cliffside gray." we tried some other colors before finally repainting it this cool gray-blue. we really like it!
