HomeGoods: LA Bargain Shopping

010408_homegoods.jpg

We're no different from anyone else--we love ourselves a bargain. We peruse the home section of Ross, obviously do a lot of sleuthing at Target and when we make it further south we always stop in at HomeGoods. We hit up the bedding section first

since they normally have a great selection of duvet covers, plain white sheets and memory foam toppers. Then it's towels, throw pillows, mirrors and kitchen stuff. We haven't used HomeGoods for furniture or rugs yet, but what we love about it is that even though the store isn't anywhere near as modern as we would normally describe our taste, if we go in with an open mind we almost always come out with something unexpected that we love.

Do you guys do Homegoods? Would you recommend any one store over another? I've mainly hit up the Seal Beach branch but I know they're all over. Ever bought a rug or a piece of furniture? Do you use it to stock up on basics? They have a whole 'decorative' section that can often seem too ornate but there have definitely been vases that have caught my eye. You?

These guys are actually tied in with Marshall's and TJMaxx. Sometimes you'll notice the merchandise in one has tags from another. And they often have the same or similar merchandise at the same time. For instance, I don't remember seeing the Taj Mahal bookends, but they were ones for the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben and something NYC-specific.

The Seal Beach store has the best selection from all the HG stores that I have been to. The store in Costa Mesa is very picked over and is not worth your time going there. HG has great deals, but you have to be prepared to search and dig through all the cheap items for the good stuff. It's always an adventure.

HG is a huge hit with me and my mom and cousins, and we're up here in Minnesota! A few scattered around the Twin Cities area, they are always an occassion to indulge in a few hours of digging for treasures. And we ALWAYS leave with some good finds. Never miss the pots and pans for some great deals on excellent items.

Another "yes" vote from sunny Sao Paulo, Minnesota. At HG in Har Mar, I found my Chantal sugar & creamer set for $10: a pair of chunky, round-bellied ceramics in bright grass green.

I live in NYC, but whenever I visit my family in KY I end up with something from Home Goods. Usually it's bedding. But most recently, I bought a whole bunch of Pillivuyt procelain dishes - roasters and serving trays. The very same pieces are still at Williams Sonoma for more than twice as much.

We have an enormous Home Goods out here on Staten Island, NYC. I've gotten quite a number of dining room chairs, and decorative touches like picture frames, candles, and bathroom soaps. What I love best is the opportunity to haggle, and, of course, the treasure hunt.
Last week I found an entire set of teal and gold Ralph Lauren china which, at $1.50/piece, are cheap enough to use everyday.

LOVE HG! I second cmarkwell on the Seal Beach comment. I've been to other locations in Yonkers, NY and Westchester, CA and the SB store is much neater and less frenetic.

My latest snag from there is a set of organic sheets that sells for about double the price online.

Right smack in the middle of the country, us Washingtonians have Home Goods.

I have found quite a few staple pieces at Home Goods. Two of my most popular purchases have been a black simple desk which only cost $100. And I also found a rustic cabinet for $99.

For you Nor-Easterns, there is a Home Goods right in Danbury Connecticut. A hour from the city but def worth stopping by if you happen to be heading upstate.

The more frequently you go, the more likely you find great pieces.

True dat. I found some Royal Doulton Water Lily pasta bowls once for 25% of retail. Still pricey at $17/each but they were gorgeous. Just saw a La Creuset pot at Marshall's yesterday.

They sell Hillcrest bedding which is a good price and decent thread count (310).

Same consensus - great stuff but some stores are pick over much more than others. Recent finds: Jonathan Adler shower curtain, Pillivuyt roasters, nice glasses that are more than 2x the price at Sur la Table, basic sheets, storage bins, etc. Just have to pick through a lot of shopworn stuff and seconds! Furniture looks beat up lots of times so haven't gotten lucky there yet.

i shop tjmaxx/homegoods all the time. now i've taken to buying an item at tjmaxx, then going to look for more of the same at marshalls if i need more of them. the stock is really interchangable. i wanted two carafes for a party and bought one alfi at tj's and one at marshalls, both for $9.99.

i also buy lots of kerafour items there. so crisp, modern, and white...no one knows i paid $3 a serving dish...

you just have to know what to look for!

I like HG for bedding, bath and kitchen stuff mostly. I don't like their selection of furniture because it's not my taste. Although, I have boughten a great mosaic bistro set that is perfect for outdoors.

I've picked up a lot of kitchen things at those stores--great cutlery, wedgwood, le creuset... but the best find was a red four slice dualit toaster for 50 bucks! someone had jammed the crumb tray in the wrong way, but a little screwdriver (which I found in the men's gifts area) fixed it. it looks great, makes perfect toast, takes up tons of space on my counter, and it makes me feel good to know I saved so much money!

marshalls and homegoods ROCK.

my best find to date? I bought an entire iitala knife set (all open stock) there! Very nice quality, and the chefs knife was under $35!

I also bought an iitala vase. Homegoods and ebay have fed my voracious iitala appetite quite well.... and at a steep discount :-D

Uhm, or Staten Island a grand 30 mns out of Midtown. We exist, too, ya know!

My mom is obsessed with Home Goods. Is there really any difference between Home Goods and TJ Maxx/Marshalls? I hesitate to make the trek to Woodland Hills, nevermind Seal Beach.
