don't you think this poll would be more informative if we knew how many rooms one was getting for the rent one paid?

$1275 for a 1BR in West Hollywood with my hubby and 2 dogs. Small apartment but nice amenities. Also, the park down the street more than makes up for the small indoor space.

@ 6 years ago I left a very nice spacious one-bedroom with swimming pools, apartment complex in Los Feliz (right on the blvd.) to a dumpy 70's aprtment located in no-man's land (adjacent-adjacent-adjacent-adjacent to Hancock Park) in the City of LA proper. The rent at my old place is probably up to four figures as the landlord took advantage of the 7% increase every year. I'm up to $525.00 a month after initially moving in paying a $510.00 first and a $200.00 dollar deposit...with two cats. Tenants pay for gas and electric. There are 12 units, underground parking, we all share one washer and one dryer and a clothesline. Yeah, I'm lucky, but if I won the lotto, I'd bail in a minute. It's noisy, hot (lack of trees), and anything not secured (read: locked up) is stolen.

$416 for central Glendale in a 2 bedroom 900 sq ft apartment. It is a condo that is rented out... The rent seems to go up about 4% a year - sometimes a bit less but often a bit more. Shared laundry with unlimited water. The main downsides is that the place has not been updated by the owner in a fair while and parking is often a problem. A problem in that the newest residence seem to either park in my spot or block it - grrr. I once had to have 5 autos move to let me out... I have been saving for a while and now that housing prices are lowering, I might just leave to get a same sized house when someone bugs me enough. Rant... Sorry.
