Cat Napping: A Weekend Treat

012609catnaps01.jpgThis weekend we treated ourselves to something we had not enjoyed in a long while: a two hour, late afternoon siesta. We used to nap regularly in your youth, but with our weekends as busy as our weekdays, we had nearly forgotten the wonderful pleasure of slipping inside cool sheets and feeling the heavy embrace of several comforters ontop, guaranteeing a check-in into the Snooze Motel. We slept the sleep of gods Sunday afternoon, and woke up refreshed to work well into the late evening (probably too late, really), a luxury we hope to enjoy a little bit more often.

Some people say 15-30 minutes is optimum for a nap (bah!), while others like ourselves like to push the snoring limits around 2 hours before waking back up. What's your inclination for that most special of weekend hobbies, taking a nap?

I'll fess up. I'm a cat -- or power -- napper. Usually 15 to 20 minutes midday does it.

During the summer, when I'm not teaching (I'm a grad student), I like to get up early and workout and then work on the dissertation and then come home, have lunch, and sleep for an hour or two before getting up and working a few more hours. I live in Tucson and do not have air conditioning (though I do have swamp cooling), so a siesta is actually one of the best ways to spend a couple of the hottest hours of the day.

I've only recently been able to allow myself to nap. Usually waking up from a nap means I'll be groggy the rest of the day. I'm hoping that changes eventually. I like sleeping!

Sometimes I loose control of the napping process and wake up 4 hours later.

That's my lil' feline homeboy, Eames, whose yawns are legendary in the cute department :)

I can't nap for more than a 30 minute span, unless I'm ill. If I do, I can't sleep properly at night.

Just a nap tip- if you find that if you nap you have trouble sleeping at night, try napping on the couch. I used to be in sputniks boat till I started couch napping.

One of my very favorite things is a cat nap with my partner. It feels like we're stealing something out of the day for ourselves. We haven't had one in months, but this is a reminder to make time for one!

I'm not allowed to nap. I'm terrible at it. If I nap, I end up napping for like 4 hours (I excel at hitting the snooze bar...) and then I wake up at 5 or 6pm, wide awake for the next 8 hours. Napping is no fun for me.

A couple of 15min naps a day are perfect. If it goes longer than that, like an hr., I am either in a fog or a bad mood for the rest of the day.

One sleep cycle lasts approximately 80 minutes (an hour and a half). For those of us who are sleep deprived, simply allowing ourselves the peace and quiet to indulge in a good long nap are restoring our bodies in a healthy way.
The old expression 'beauty sleep' IS true! Getting the proper amount revives our skin.

Naps make me want more sleep and then my sleeping schedule is messed up for days...so not allowed - LOL. To Jen of the North - couches don't make it better. We have a super comfy couch (where I normally am when I fall asleep and have to be half carried/half walked to bed) in which if I fall asleep on it, I might be awake 3 hours later.

I nap with my cat! Cats know their naps. She plops like a pancake on my chest and it's as if our heartbeats synchronize.

Ugh. I've had many many people extol the virtues of naps to me over the years, but I have the same problem as many people here... I can never fall asleep when I try, unless it's 7 or 8 at night, in which case when I wake up I'm too groggy to actually do anything post nap.

Naps are neccesary for functioning for me! Because I have to get up early and CAN'T make myself fall asleep before a particular hour, I've usually under-slept. Even a half-hour nap can ensure that I don't fall asleep by dinner.

Naps are a gift from the gods!!!

I adore Sunday afternoon naps, but usually it's the couch that calls, not the bed. For some reason naps in my mind are associated with being fully/mostly dressed, and I wouldn't want to wear my jeans to bed.

Oh, and cats are the best nap inducers.

Being pregnant, I nap whenever I can squeeze it in. I usually wake up before I go into a deep sleep, it's like an internal alarm. I never used to nap, I felt like it interrupted the flow of the day. Once I have the baby- forget it.

I haven't been able to nap properly lately, but I do enjoy a good 1-1.5 hour nap on the couch (usually while watching TV). It has to be during daylight hours, though, or else I'll never get up.

I wish I could have lunchtime naps. I think they would make me a happier person.

For some reason, I can't sleep a full nights sleep. So I'm sleepy/tired all the time. Been tested for apnea and the like and it's nothing physical... So I sleep when I can. I used to nap in my car during college, or in the student lounge between classes. Now I sleep in my car during lunch when I drive in. I try not to sleep in the afternoon, but when I do, it's 45 mins to 1.5 hours. This allows me be to be alert, rather than super tired late at night, when my friends are awake and gives me me my full 7 hours day

I love naps! On the weekends, I do 1-2 hour naps on the sofa with my dog. It never messes up my night sleep schedule. I think I just need a lot of sleep.

At 4:00 every afternoon, my eyelids start to droop. I always say that if we lived in a sane and reasonable society, I could go home at 3, nap from 4-5:30, work again from 6-8 (from home), and then have supper. Alas, I'm stuck on the 9-5 treadmill. But on weekends, I nap.

I mourn for all the naps I resisted as a child - why did I fight it? Did I not know what I was missing?!

I kind of fell out of the habit of napping on weekends (or even just lying down and shutting my eyes for a few minutes) because I had this neighbor who, without fail, would start blasting his stereo the minute I laid down. The bass was enough to keep me from ever being able to relax. He's moved out now and the complex is much quieter, so maybe I should try again, before some other noisy person moves into that unit.

I think 45-60 minutes is about perfect.

Naps generally make me groggy after. I don't often take naps because naps used to wreck my nighttime sleep, but not really anymore. But, I just was in the habit of thinking naps=bad. I occasionally will have a luscious nap on the weekends (sweet: always with the cat, who's always ready for a nap) if I'm really tired. But always the grogginess after.
