Reader Survey: Good Time To Get Deals on Antiques?

022309_brick.jpgReading one of our favorite blogs, the Brick House (where Morgan finds the best finds ever and makes us jealous, but we still love her because she's as frugal as we are) we noticed that she's been able to get some wicked deals on antiques because so many stores are being hit hard by the downturn and discounting classic items. It's not great news for shop owners but have you gotten deals at antique stores and flea markets in the last couple of months? If you own an antiques store or sell at flea markets have you been more likely to discount your wares?

022309_coffeetable.jpgMorgan found the coffee table in the picture for 70% off recently and it definitely made us drool. She's shopping in the Inland Empire and Palm Springs so it might be different than in LA proper, but have you guys been finding deals? Are you spending money on furniture these days or buying pieces that might be a little out of your price range but still a great deal?

One of my favorite shops seems to be raising their prices, which baffles me.

I have this type of furniture from when it was original. I have to laugh that it's now called antiques. If you buy it when it is original and then keep it for years, it all comes back into style.

The Wassily looks really awesome with the sheepskin cover and pillow.

I sell Mid Century furniture on my site, www.sitandreadfurniture.blogspot.com, and business has been great. I keep my prices low to begin with because my overhead is low, so I suspect that people are seeking out my stuff because it is more affordable. I have noticed that brick and mortar shops around NYC and Brooklyn have been slashing prices significantly.

I find it harder to find a good deal since everyone one is in to mid-century modern and buying it up.

I believe the sheepskin covers are actually small area rugs from IKEA. I have several of them. They are quite nice, but somewhat of a pain to clean.

As for the substance of this article, I find that, at least in the DC metro area, better deals may be found for mid-century antiques as a result of the economic downturn. This doesn't mean that the antiques are going for bargaining basement prices, but a $1,000 item might be knocked down to $800 or so.

The antique mall near where I live has definitely been slashing prices - I just bought an antique Ethan Allen solid cherry dining table and four chairs for a total of $300. And it comes with two leaves! Fully extended, it seats 10. I've been a happy camper.

im not in LA (SF bay area) and i just got a beautiful 1950's credenza/buffet for $400 (including tax) at a great antiques store in Burlingame. solid wood, near perfect condition. it amazed me that it lasted as long as it did without someone swooping it up, it had been at the store for probably about 3 weeks before i finally gave in and bought it. considering the condition it was in, i think it could have been several hundred dollars more. yay!!!

Thanks Laure for the mention!

The sheepskins are the Ikea ones. I got three of them from a Salvation Army in Covina a few months ago. They were $2 each during a storewide 50% off deal.

One is a little funky though...

Just yesterday I sold a very nice, high end contemporary Italian leather sofa/daybed and today I'm looking for a MCM or Danish Modern sofa... so I'm really HOPING that I'll be able to find something nice at a good price... Hard to tell how things are here in San Diego, as pieces seem to move through the few good shops here fairly quickly in my estimation. We shall see!!

Mom and I were in an antique mall in Tacoma Wa over the weekend and several of the dealers were having sales of 20-50% off and she found 2 reproduction apothacary jars, in the 2 smaller sizes to replace 2 that had gotten broken about 25 or so years ago and were part of a 4 jar set, originally sold in the late 60's as a canister set for 50% off.

Justveggingout-
It's easy to clean sheepskin rugs with a dog brush -- the kind you'd use for a Bouvier.
