Survey: Technology in the Bathroom
Austin

092408techbath-01.jpg While checking out the neat retro bathroom in the latest issue of Better Homes and Gardens, we noticed a small, very subtle television inset into one of the walls. We certainly know the technology for showers, toilets and faucets has gotten quite fancy in recent years, but what about luxuries like televisions and computers in the bathroom? As our homes get more and more modern, will the bathroom just become a natural choice for more technology...

Seriously, are we so addicted to TVs and computers that we can't brush our teeth without having a screen to stare at?

...and aren't there more comfortable chairs in the house than the toilet?

We have a phone in the bathroom. But no TV or computer.

When I lived in the burbs I loved having a tv near my huge soaker tub. Especially since it was big enough for two, you could sort of hang out in there. And I think the phone in the bathroom is much weirder than the tv, personally. So I guess it takes all kinds, no?

Nothing like hanging out in the place where you poo watching a movie with your babe as you both turn into prunes...right?

if you're spending that much time on the toilet, see your doctor.

I would only do it if I didn't have a TV elsewhere in the house.

I have a tiny tv by my bathroom sink, so I can watch/listen to the morning news while I get ready for work. It's not on cable, so I guess in a few months it won't get a usable signal, and I'm NOT upgrading to HD for 15 min a day.

I must admit, I've toyed with the idea of mounting a tv above my tub so I can catch the morning news while I get ready each day. But to do it right, I'd have to pay someone to put a safe plug in the wall and add a new cable outlet in the wall too. I've got an extra tv I could use for the purpose, but spending all that extra dough to do something so unnecessary makes it stay just an idea, not reality.

I actually enjoy the idea of a small tv in the bathroom to watch while enjoying a nice long bath. The coolest bathroom technology I've seen was at The Charles Hotel in Cambridge, MA, which had a hidden TV inside the mirror. A little screen magically appears behind the mirrored glass at the touch of a button - turn it off, and it is like it was never there. Seems like a classy way to have technology in the bathroom.

Why, why, why isn't a nice soak in the tub, with only the occasional sound of water splashing, enough for people? With all the money spent on gorgeous bathrooms that are zen-like "retreats," why ruin it?

If you want the news in the morning, try a small radio. If you are really that addicted to TV, call your doctor.

No no no NO NO!

No TV or phone in the bathroom!

No TV in the bedroom!

Keep in mind that if we put TVs in bathrooms, some people will stop reading altogether.
