Survey: What's Your Most Functional Furniture Piece?
Austin

100808funcfurn-01.jpgThis post could also be titled: "What's the one piece of furniture you just can't live without?" Maybe it's that oversized, comfy reading chair. Perhaps it's your substantial dining table you fit your big family around for the holidays. Even still maybe it's your bed you love to catch Z's in. We've all got that favorite piece of furniture we use all the time, what's the story behind yours? More after the jump...

In small apartments and houses, sometimes "most functional" means the piece that does double duty! Like dining tables that also serve as desks and couches that are sometimes the guest bed. Tell us about your pieces of furniture that play different roles in your home and some of the creative ways you've made them all work for you! What's your piece of furniture that you can't live without and why?

Bed! Coffee table comes in second.

Our giant kitchen butcher block!
It's the most-used piece of furniture in the house, hands-down. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, parties-turned-kitchen parties, everything!

Hands down its my Sealy Posturpedic mattress. It almost functions too well..every time I lie on it I immediately start drifting off to sleep.

family room couches (3 seats/2seats/danish day bed) all are very comfy and durable .

The breakfast table set from Ikea ,this set has been cleaned outside with liquid dish soap and rinsed thoroughly with the garden hose hundreds of times within the last 4yrs ,I've even bleached it once and it's still looking in brand new condition.all our meals are there, homework, art and craft activities .(Unlike my Wegner dining set with its rope vintage chairs ),one day I'm selling it and get myself something from Ikea so we get to use our dining room .

I love our Arts & Crafts settle. Our living room is tiny, so it's that and a wing chair for watching tv and enjoying the fire in our wood burning stove. I also love my guest bed, the frame was a $20 garage sale find.

Wow, this is like a game of "what peice of furniture would you take to a desert isle?"

I love my mattress more than any other I've ever slept on, but it doesn't do double duty unless you count it as a pet-bed too (it's the cats' favorite place to lounge).

My dining table is unique -- I've never seen another like and for that reason I'd be hard pressed to let it go. But the chairs are just average chairs, so I could sit on coconut-hull tuffets.

I adore my sofa. The color, the scale, the comfort. The coffee table is nice, but not truly unique. I also have a side table from asia that's shapped like a four-leaf clover. It's super special.

Other than those pices, I think if I had to have a distress sale everything else could be replaced by something of which I'd be equally fond.

Spanna dining room table is most functional and versatile (most small meals, all large meals, desk), although the Peekaboo coffee table comes in as second most used (some TV meals, kicking feet up). Neither of these is my favorite piece of furniture, which is my canopy bed.

A lovely old 27-drawer apothecary chest that stores computer gear, plastic bags, mittens, napkins, infrequently used kitchen gear, take-out menus, candles, pet care items...well, you get the idea. It is long and narrow, tall enough to function as landing strip and buffet/server too. It still bears the labels from its first incarnation, which include "cars," "dinos," "dress up," "music" and "useful." I won't move anywhere it doesn't fit.

I have a favourite chair. It's teak and has the ugliest green tweed upholstery, but I still love it.
I tried to buy it off of Kijiji but it had already sold, then 2 weeks later, the ad was up again. The sale fell through because there is a small hole in the seat.
The seller dropped his price from $150 to $45!! So I snapped it up!

I've been in love ever since. *sigh*

I agree with lovelyrita -- I love, love, love the sofa pictured. what, where and can I even remotely afford it?

agreed with GypsyTeri and lovelyrita - what is that sofa??

As for the poll, I'd say my dining room table - I do everything (well, just about ;-) there!

definitely my west elm overlapping squares daybed. I use it as a sofa, a bed, a desk (yes, I do schoolwork and read in bed!) and even (ahem) a dining room seat all at once. In a tiny studio every piece has to perform multiple functions, but this one really does do everything! It was a big splurge for me but was really worth it in the long run.

it's a toss up between my comforter and my tv. My comforter is sooo soft and squishy, I keep it on my bed even in the middle of summer. I say my TV because I just bought it...it's a 32' Samsung LCD...I've never owned an LCD and I've never owned a 32' so this is a BIG deal to me...it replaced a 19' CRT I had had in my living room for two years...I'm loving it..but if you pressed me to pick just one, it has to be my comforter.

I've said it before and I will say it again, the Tug Boat sectional from in-house design in Los Angeles is da bomb. From parties to sleep-overs, this chic and comfy piece has never let me down.

My old, beat-up armiore with the missing drawer. It was my closet when I was a little girl, and come March I'm planning on putting my baby's clothes (etc.) in it.

sigh... it WAS the huge pottery-barn-on-sale-catalogue-only white dining table I had in both my NY apartments (one smaller than the next)... I wrote at it, dined on it, served from it at big boozy parties and loved the look of it at all times

never had more than one chair against it except when dining (I'm a chair-o-holic, those were scattered all over the other nooks and rooms and corners)... lover of stools too which kept the place from looking crowded, and those lived sometimes under it. .. table was pushed against the wall unless it was needed for a Dinner Party.... its clear empty expanse of white made small room appear HUGE

didn't follow me to LA

irreplaceable in every way (SO discontinued!)

My favorite piece if furniture is also the most useful - my credenza in the hallway that is an art-display area, landing strip and storage cabinet all in one.

My comfy microfiber chaise lounge. It's my favorite place to relax when I can get it. My little yorkie MacGyver loves it too and he's claimed it as his own! LOL.

It's a tie between my massive 2-arm chaise and my bed. What can I say, I read a lot and I'm lazy!

Chaise - napping, reading, snuggling, watching tv & movies while eating popcorn
Bed - sleeping(a lot!), napping, reading, wrapping big presents, folding clothes, watching DVDs on the laptop, snuggling, etc

my giant glass square (parsons) coffee table from room and board. i eat over it, do projects on it, use it as a snack buffet for parties, use it as a desk ...

and just a little glass cleaner and *poof* it's like nothing ever happened.
