This afternoon we were discussing room makeovers with a small group of coworkers/friends, and the topic of wallpapers came up. Almost immediately, several people rolled their eyes with disdain, remarking how much they hated wallpaper. The pro-wallpaper group referenced the ongoing trend of modern/elegant designs seen here on AT and in other decor sites/magazines, extolling these new wave of wallpapers put to rest the damning memories of ugly wall treament designs of the past. Yet, some remained adamant that walls were meant to be painted, not attired in cloth and paper treatments (note: all three of the anti-wallpaper dissenters were men). How do you feel about wallpaper?

I really do think it all depends on the type of wallpaper being used. So much of it tends to lend a business that is overpowering, plus, stripping it can be such a pain as well.
Also, many people will over do wallpaper plain and simple. There were lots of examples from the mid to late 60's through the mid 70's predominately where wild, busy wallpaper were applied quite liberally and it was just way too much.
As an accent wall, yeah, sure, but not an entire room always.

I had the exact same conversation on my way to lunch!
I am currently in love with this paper:

for an accent wall in the bedroom.

well... i love the foto.
I love wall coverings. Most wall paper is bad. But when you get to wall coverings with texture. hmmm hmmm hmmmmmm... This is the spice of walls.

Home Depot and Expo Design Centers spent hundreds of thousands of dollars ripping out their wallpaper departments about 3 years ago....About the same time the tide of wallpaper started to uptrend.
Typical....I have to laugh....all that wasted money on a trend they were about 5 years late following.
Now they have not a scrap of wallpaper in the stores.

Well, hdtex, that's one way to get wallpaper out of the hands of potential abusers.

I love some of the new wallpapers I'm seeing. If I weren't currently a renter, I would do an accent wall, or a smaller room (dining room or powder room), but not wallpaper everywhere. I'd find that overwhelming. Plus, paint (in addition to being more affordable) is just so much easier to change or repair.

I wallpapered the small vestibule at the entry of my house with some pretty splashy Orla Kiely paper, and it looks fantastic. As long as the wall underneath is properly primed, it's really not a huge deal to take wallpaper down if you eventually want to change it. Aside from the cost, it's really not much more of a commitment than paint is.

Can you please credit the photo or link to the source?

Sorry, I found it on an image aggregating website ourselves. I tried to hunt down the original source with no avail. I'll link if I do run into it (because it deserves the credit!).

big d - not at all...I had assumed that nothing could ever make me hate wallpaper more than I already do, but clearly I'd never considered the possibility of pornographic wallpaper.
