apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

What are your Plans for Memorial Day?

052208_longweeekend.jpgOh the promise of a long weekend. All those projects you could finish, all the books that could be read, all the museums to visit! We're planning to help a friend move and then will spend time with friends and family at the beach. We might stop by Ikea on the way, but otherwise, we're just looking forward to some time off and the beginning of summer. What are your plans? Survey after the jump:

clearing EVERYTHING out, cutting the amount in half (hopefully), and making room for my special friend who's moving in at the end of the month!

If I don't lose my nerve, I'm going to paint the kitchen.

Finishing the basement in our bungalow. It's all about painting this weekend, so we can install flooring next week, and then finally start enjoying our media room, child's play room, and have the guest over in our new guest room. FINALLY! Luckily the weather won't be nice enough to distract us from the project.

This weekend we're ripping out the upper cabinets in our kitchen to include the soffits above them. Ick. Then, refacing the existing lower cabinets.

I'm moving this weekend too! New apt. is 3-1/2 rooms, the 1/2 room being a dining area off of the galley kitchen.

Since I don't "dine" except in front of the TV, I want to make that room into my art studio and would love to see a post on artist's home studios here on AT...

All artists out in AT land, how about posting pictures of your working art space?

I'm continuing my latest round of "cut out the clutter." I'm really getting into the nooks and crannies now.

Tonight's project is mercilessly editing my suitcase collection. I've got several empty suitcases taking up a sizeable portion of my walk-in closet. For some reason that I don't recall but I think it had to do with color frustrations, a decade ago I bought 4 identical carryon's with wheels. I use the green one a few times a year, but never use the black or navy ones. I don't even think I have enough clothes to fill them anymore.

Then there is my huge suitcase, my garment bag, etc. I find myself always reaching for one of the same two bags when I travel, so the question I'm pondering this evening is how many of these suitcases I really need to hang onto.

My guess is the huge suitcase, my green carry-on and my carryon backpack will make the cut. Everything else will go. The only reason to hang onto the others is if I move, and in that case I figure whatever doesn't fit in my suitcases can go into boxes. (this is why it's a good Friday night project, I already basically know my answer so I can still go out on the town and yet also declutter.)

My other big project for the weekend is ruthlessly going through my computer hardware and software and pruning out the old, the dead, the undesired. I have an old laptop, an old desktop and various other computer parts to prune out of my life.

Not a whole lot, a friend is coming into town tomorrow for the afternoon, otherwise it's go through and purge both virtual and physical files and do that kind of organizing. Outside of that, it's take it as it comes and see what happens but mostly since the weather will be mostly cloudy and/or damp, it'll be a good time to just relax and chill.

Had kind of planned on having a place that does automotive AC work to replace the accumulator and the service ports in the conversion project so I can have me some AC in my 15 YO Ranger truck, but that's on hold due to what it'd cost even though I had most of the parts necessary to do said project. I'd have done the replacement myself last weekend but I could not seperate one hose/line from the old accumulator so had to shelve it for now.

And by conversion is convert the factory AC from the old refrigerant to the new stuff. It's not been working in at least 2 years due mostly to a lack of use by previous owner(s).
