What's Your Style?

031908_gennine.jpg

When we do housetours, one of the first questions we ask is: What's your style? In the Cure this week, we're learning that it helps to define the look or mood that you're going for to help set the tone for the rest of the journey. So what's your style?

031908_style2.jpg

It can be difficult to put your finger on what you like, or maybe you know very specifically what you're into. When I had to name my style for my house tour I had a lot of trouble and ended up with California Casual because that's the term that best described the attitude or mood I was after. I like things stylish but not too fussy.

If I had to give it a name, I would call it "Danish Regency."

I like to think I have a modern style with that mid century twist, but if you saw my house you'd never know it. I'm with Sydney on this one... My style is definitely based on what I can afford.
I'm just waiting for the day that my parents hand me down their danish mid-cen buffet and hutch along with the matching teak dining table.

some day... some day.

Until then, the dream house in my head is definitely super cool.

I like "Salvation Army Chic". That describes us pretty well, as we only own three or four pieces of "new" furniture. Everything else is either a family heirloom (or hand-me-down, depending on how you see it) or a thrift store find. But it's all definitely chic... in its own funky sort of way.

I think my style is officially called "transitional." I feel most comfortable in soft surroundings (a lot of variety in textiles) with a plush feel. I find that rooms that are strictly one style feel overly clinical and "unlivable". Even French Regency, as fussy and dramatic as it is, doesn't feel warm and inviting. My favorite house tours on AT are always a mash up of great accents or foundation pieces from different styles or eras that act as a foil for each other.

I aspire to Whimsical-Industrial Regency...but at the moment I think it's best called Magpie Bookworm (actually, at the moment it's called Packing Boxes, but I hope to get past that).

Ecclectic, if by that you mean late 20th century graduate student; the only problem with this style is that the PhD was granted in 2001 and the house was purchased in 2004.

My style is what I've started to call 'Hollywood and Western' (hence the name of my blog and flickr). I have to admit I thought I was pretty clever when I thought that up, because it's also an intersection near my apartment!

It means that I do like Hollywood regency, but usually it's too fussy and precious for me. My version is a lot more about the slightly tacky, sleazy ranch house side of the '60's and '70's. I like lots of leather and sheepskin, oak, and big plants, but I like to mix in things that are much lighter and more elegant, like mercury glass or blanc de chine.

Of course, I rent, and don't have a huge budget, so most of my space doesn't strictly reflect this - I have to work to make what's there look good. When the one comfortable, good looking sofa bed you can afford suggests a different style, you have to go with it. Plus I have lots of lovely things that don't necessarily fit in. So each room is a bit different - it's all pretty masculine and retro though.

Umm ... I chose "organic modern," since I like both artfully combined into one. I'm sort of "style-stupid," so I don't really know what any of those categories are. Basically, I like Art Nouveau lines and colors as accents, but clean, crisp, non-busy "stuff" everywhere else. For those of you who know architects, I'm thinking Victor Horta meets Pierre Chareau. *shrugs* sounds organic modern to me! ;D

I'd say my style is a mix of Frank Roop & Steven Gambrel with a tinge of Wearstler and a dab of Jonathan Adler & Thomas Paul.

For the longest time I struggled to find things for my house that were "rustic modern." I eventually discovered a book by that name, bought it online, and found out that when they said rustic they really meant it! A little too rough around the edges for me, at least the way the author defined it. So now, organic modern comes along. I really love that it's easier to find things that suit me, but at the same time I hate that what I once considered to be my fairly unique style is now everywhere. I just try to buy as many antiques and thrift finds as possible to keep it unique.

I am having a hard time pinning down what my style is. Every room has a different feel. Our bedroom is Modern Organic, the living room, mid-century modern, the bathroom, Parisian bistro, and the kitchen a touch 50's. What do you call I have no idea, ecclectic modern?

i just bought an entire kitchen--minus the stove, but including the sink--of off craigslist. cabinets, sink, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, countertops, backsplash, and probably a few more things i can't remember. for $3k. so i guess my style is 'craigslist.'

whee!

When i got out of college and moved to Austin my first place was "Texas tacky"-( skins, barbed wire, limestone) . Then it morphed into "folk art/modern mexican" ,then when I moved up north it changed again to Scandi-Latino (scandinavian mixed with modern Mexican) now it's closer to "rustic, organic Danish modern" with some rooms moving toward a "Palm Beach mod/regency" flair.

I'm with Jackson. Ecclectic is one thing and whatever is at the thrift store is something entirely different. Isn't the latter what is now being referred to as "bazaar style" with multiple books on the subject now available? That distinction forced me to choose "other". Also, what about Asian as a design style?

"Chaotic." I'm finally decorating after 6 months and it's a wreck.

I know my style, but I have no idea what it would be called. White/beige/cream "background" (rugs, walls, large furniture) with bright, eclectic accents. I basically didn't want to have to choose a color scheme, so I chose a blank canvas where I can display my wide variety of cool stuff--from candy-colored table lamps to updated granny-square throws to collections of art- and handmade toys.

Having a blank canvas also allows for corners of my place to have their own theme (I say corners because my place is a glorified studio). For example, my sewing corner is girly, fresh, and pretty Martha, where my office area is much more modern...Cupertino Ikea perhaps? ;) Throughout I'm striving towards clean and bright and fun, balanced between trad and modern.

So yeah...no idea what that would be. This is the first place I've decorated, so maybe it should be called "confused".

I would say my style is modern romantic. I love textures: velvets, shag, flokati, silks, etc. I love shiny things: mirrors, polished silver. I love clean lines, no frill, no clutter, and I hate kitch. I love pink and white and brown... and pale colors. I love the luxurious look (like egyptian cotton :-)), but the midcentury look too. This past year, I've learned you don't have to be rich to achieve it. I will splurge on Panton Chairs that I love, but then settle for an Ikea table until I can afford something better. I'm all about investment pieces that will last and getting the most for your buck.

I wrestle with this, I really do. I am a person who loves labels, lists, questionnaires, self-improvement, home-improvement, yada yada - but, as many HGTV programs I've watched, style surveys as I have taken and books I've pored over trying to determine my style, I still come up befuddled. I know I gravitate toward clean lines and eco-friendly materials (so I chose Modern Organic, above), but there is an Urban (?) or maybe Bohemian (?) element that crops up constantly in my design choices - especially fabrics and artwork. What do you call that, anyway???

I dont know what my style is... I think eclectic since I have pieces from different styles, but not eclectic as in Thrift Store. More a mix of traditional furniture (burgundy brocade sofa) with world/ethnic pieces (Beluchar rug I bought in Syria). I like furniture with clean lines, beautiful craftmanship, finely grained wood. I have some beaux arts or art nouveau styled pieces, but that is not an overwhelming style choice.

I like some things from William-Sonoma Home (but not the prices) and I think most of their style is Hollywood Recency? But I wouldn't want my whole house styled that may, maybe a piece of furniture or two at the most (and no mirrored furniture for me).

I'm pretty clear on what I'm not -- not really a fan of mid-century modern, glass and steel furniture, Mod styled furniture, or even American Shaker, Mission or Country styled furniture.

So, I don't know where that leaves me. Hopefully over time I'll develop a clearer picture of what I think my style is, and a snappy sound bite to describe it. ;-)

dmstudio,

I called the last incarnation of my home "asian fusion" rather than "chinoiserie" because not only was I mixing my asians (japanese kimono, chinese foo dogs, indian buddha, etc), I wanted to convey that I was also combining western antiques in a 1990s home.

I kept some of my asian accents and am working them into my space the way Gumps sometimes does, that is to say, less overtly. If you look at a japanese ink painting on silk, you know it's asian, but the room on the whole could be somethign else entirely.
