When I was a child my mother bought a desk that had the same idea, but it was hard plastic and bright yellow and the shelf was indented in the desk. The legs were at each corner and came straight down. We had it in the kitchen. Mom paired it with an iconic plastic chair thay I can't remember the name of - all one piece of plactic that was all curves.
It was the Panton chair.
