The Gentleman's Workbench

atla031408_gentswork.jpgWe're big time admirers of space efficient solutions from Japan (who does it better?). The Trunk Station AD was our favourite modern pick for compact work space solution, and now we've got an aspirational choice in a more traditional finish...

The Gentleman's Workbench designed by Hiroki Abe was inspired by the design of traditional Japanese kimono chests, kiri- tansu. This updated desk version opens up to reveal a leather-covered surface for writing/working, with the underside of the top lid covered in a metal plate for use with magnets, stainless steel cup receptacles for holding smaller items and a complimenting work bench that is described as "reminiscent of a gate leading to a shrine with clean, sharp lines". Equally beautiful, open or closed, the Gentleman's Workbench is hand crafted, and priced accordingly at ¥1.2 million, taking about 50 days to construct. That's about $12,000, so get saving.

With the dollar going down... it is even more than that. Thank you George Bush and Dick Cheney!

That is the perfect thing for my husband. Too bad about the price, but boy that would be neat!

I'll bet a local carpenter/cabinetmaker could make something similar for under $2000.

Love the concept, but “Gentleman”? Come on, aren't we in the 21st century? What about just calling it Tinkerer's Workbench and leaving gender out of it.

Tinkering gal.

I would never spend $12K on furniture, but man, I like it.
