The scratching of items being placed on the table may have me looking for an alternative. How about a dry erase table?

but really, who wants writing/scrawling/doodling all over your coffee table? i mean, unless you have kids, im not sure who this would appeal to...

Many of my artist and designer friends would love a coffee table they could draw and erase without worry, including myself (sans kids here). All those adults you see at restaurants doodling with crayons on parchment paper covered tables? They might see the appeal too. Potatoes, pota-tuhs~

I love this! It would be a lot of fun at low key type parties, or just hanging out bored at home....glass of wine, impromptu hangman game....

I've already painted my coffee table black, and distressed it so I won't care who puts their feet on it (I know, defeatist attitude)--I'm tempted to do this, now.

i just painted a chalkboard wall in my kitchen...am loving it AND saving on post it notes!

I really like this too, but I'd love a black dry erase board with color markers even more! Maybe it'd be better if there was a top you could put over it when you wanted to use it as an actual coffee table and not get ink or chalk all over everything.
