The Best Green Paint Color

10-30-09Ryegrass01.JPGCraving a new paint color but fearful of leaving the beloved beige behind? Neutral and versatile doesn’t have to be plain Jane. Look out the window and borrow colors from nature, like blue and green, because nature always gets color right. We think we have discovered the perfect green paint to bring the outside in. . .

An almost leafy green, Sherwin William’s “Ryegrass” seems to work almost anywhere with almost any accent color. It looks amazing with chocolate brown, flame orange, bright pink or rich violet. We have painted this on living room, dining room and bedroom walls with success every time. The secret to the flexibility of “Ryegrass” is that the undertones are not too yellow or blue. It refrains from being too neon in a glow-stick way or too safely sage in a waiting room way. Maybe it’s easy being green after all.

10-30-09colorwheel-01.JPGP.S. Thanks again to Sherwin Williams for offering another tool to help us capture nature's color palette. ColorSnap is a free iPhone App that allows you to "snap" a sample of a color that you see anywhere and then have it matched to a Sherwin Williams paint color. It even provides a coordinating color scheme. Now, that makes us color happy!

What is your guaranteed, works-every-time paint color?

The color looks a lot like the one we painted our first floor in and we love it!

I painted my living room Behr's "Shire Green" and I love it! It's so springy and fresh.

The best white of all time is Benjamin Moore's "Decorator's White".

I also had a living room years ago that was painted with Martha Stewart's "Sunflower", and it was golden and burnished in the afternoon light--yummy!

Yes, where can I get that couch?

The room looks vaguely familiar from a house tour or other article posted not too long ago (in which the couch may be identified), but you haven't linked to the source of that photo.

That green is beautiful, it does remind me of nature in all its leafy glory. But mostly I need to know where that couch is from! It looks like just the right balance of comfy and architecturally good looking. Dream couch!!

I used Ryegrass in my kitchen two months ago, and now I can't wait to repaint. It is a really pretty color, and I thought that this time I had found the perfect shade of green that I had been looking for...but on my walls, it's actually kind of boring. Perhaps it has something to do with the fluorescent overhead light and the white shelving. Sigh. I had such high hopes. Green has always been tough for me.

Our bedroom is Sherwin-Williams Shagreen. It's been on our walls for three years and I still really like it. It's a very soft green. Very calming.

Just a recommendation.

Our office room is painted Plantain by C2 and I love it. It's a much yellow-ier green than the one pictured above, though--nearly on the border between yellow and green.

This is a room from the Barnhill house in Austin, TX and was designed by www.sparkinteriors.com. It has not been featured on AT before.

Ask and you shall receive. . . since so many of you are intrigued by the "perfect" sofa in this photo, be sure to check our Thursday post for all the deets. Find out who makes it and where to get. And yes, it is as comfortable as it looks.

Sherwin Williams had some green paints a few years ago - you can still get them on request. Quiet Veranda, Pale Artichoke, Summer Resort. They were on the same pallet card, can't remember which was the darkest and which was the lightest. But they are absolutely awesome greens that go with anything.

The wall color in the picture shown above looks just like the color I used in my kitchen, and I'm really happy with it. A nice soft green looks wonderful in any room.

"Beloved beige" ??

Hi, this is Katharine the homeowner. The sofa was purchased at Urban Living in Austin. Misty will post details tomorrow, I think. It is an amazing sofa. The corner is definitely the most fought-over spot in the house. We have two energetic preschoolers and only one living space so we needed a sturdy, practical, comfortable, user-friendly couch...with hopes that it might look ok, too. This fits the bill. As for the paint color, having the ryegrass walls next to the green trees outside the windows is incredibly relaxing. We found that a lighter color green really disappeared with so much natural light. Ryegrass is very soothing during the day, then at night it intensifies and pops a little more. Thanks to Misty for suggesting the color.

Glidden's Eastern Lighthouse. It looks greeny-gray at some times of the day, and gray-green at others. I painted my bedroom more than a year ago and still love it.

I really like either the Dunn Edwards Woven Reed color that someone posted above, and I really like bright granny smith apple greens. I love nature, but to me, the color in this post is just a bit blah... not vibrant or neutral. Of course, I didn't like the green "70s garden party" room in the color contest either. I wonder if this shade green will be a new trend?

Katherine--I love your living room. Very well put together without looking "decorated." You have a great color sense. I love that sectional myself, and also have one living space (for now), and two kids, although ours are a toddler and a teenager. I'm going to look into getting that sectional. Can you tell me what fabric it's upholstered in?

Thanks Pencils! Ack! Sorry, I don't remember the fabric name... :(
