I love storing bikes by hanging them from the ceiling or up on a wall, but for people with heavy bikes this may be difficult to use because of the heavy lifting involved. The higher over your head, the harder it is to lift. I have a fantastic bike hook from Mountain Equipment Co-op that I recommend to everyone. It attaches to the wall so that my bicycle hangs vertically, with the tires against the wall. There is also a small piece that adheres to the wall so that the back (lower) wheel rests inside of it, instead of leaving scuff marks. The great thing about it is that each person can hang the hook as high or low as they like.

what's wrong with a hook? this just looks like it added a feature that can potentially break.

Wasn't this an invention on that American Inventor show a couple years ago?

How do you remove the bike from the Gladiator Claw? Can it be mounted sideways on the wall instead of the ceiling for shorter folks? I am not so concerned about a cool hook as one which keeps the bike from getting stolen! Thanks for this post.

i remember this from American Inventor too...they were one of the finalist.

Holy cow...the cycloc IS cool! Wow.

This is too funny... my professor in college was the guy who prototyped this for his senior design class back when he was an Undergrad at GT. He ended up getting his PhD from MIT and came back to GT to teach.

He spent the entire semester talking this thing up and showed us each and every step he went through to get this thing mass produced by Gladiator.

I'm glad to see its getting some publicity (even though I have a feeling this was paid for).

The Cycloc costs more than a lot of bikes...

It really only works well with Men's road bikes that have a perfectly horizontal top-tube and narrow handlebars...

...it's perfectly useless for women's bikes, mountain bikes, cruisers or comfort bikes like the one shown w/ an angled tube as the bike in the photo.

at any home improvement store you can find a rubber covered utility hook that works great to hank bikes from the ceiling either perpendicular or horizontal. i believe they cost $2-$4 depending on the size.

Hmmm. Did the woman in that photo get that bike up there herself?

@JasmineIsDomestic : Soon to be released is a wall mountable version of this device and will hang directly on our Gladiator GearTracks or GearWall panels.

@amt230 & crystalina : A ceiling mounted hook requires vertical and horizontal movement and is sometimes not nearly as easy and smooth as only lifting a bike straight up and down as with our system.

@3seapeo : The same bumper that you hit to close the claws also opens the claws... think like a pen clicker, click once to open, once to close, making it very simple to operate. Gladiator also offers many other ways to hang your bikes in the garage, including horizontal and vertical bike hooks that mount onto our wall systems. We have other hooks for every need you can imagine. =)

@bepsf : I agree that the Cycloc may look cool, but it is very expensive and very limited as to what bikes it can hold, where our unit is not restricted whatsoever by the type of bike or tire.

@kelleyk : Yes, and once you actually get to use one of these you will really be surprised at how easy it is to use in one quick and smooth movement, as you do not need to worry about lifting into a perfect position as you would with a regular ceiling mounted "J" hook.

Thanks for the mention and the plug. In the two days since I mentioned this product on Twitter, I seemed to get a lot of positive feedback on its simplicity. Granted, it's always an issue lifting something "heavy" overhead, but this product is really inspiring.

Just to set a fair warning: I think bike experts recommend you're careful when it comes to hanging storage options. There is a chance that hooks like that, holding the bike at a single point, may warp the wheel.

I don't know for sure, but I do know a lot of bike geeks :)
