This or That? Clear or Opaque Shower Doors

112608clearoropaque.jpgWe were having a discussion with a couple of friends when an unexpected topic popped up (as they always do amongst friends). One friend mentioned how excited they were about installing a new clear glass, modern shower into their master bathroom. But another friend interjected their worry about "feeling too exposed" and shared their preference for a frosted shower door or curtain while showering. Personally, this doesn't apply at all to us, since we only have a bath tub. How does everyone else feel about this personal preference?

Clear is actually easier to clean - and there's always the bathroom door...

I voted opaque because I have clear and they are a nightmare to keep clean. I don't care either way as far as privacy is concerned as I agree that is what the bathroom door is for.

Id do opaque from the floor to about 4 feet up. Then clear.

So I can see out.

I have the clear frameless glass and unless you are dedicated to a post-shower squeegee, they are a pain to keep clean. I'd go opaque, or at least translucent next time around.

Funny, we debated this at some length when re-doing our bathroom. We only have one bathroom, and it has to house our washer and dryer too, so some kind of opaque seemed appropriate just because otherwise, you can't have anyone else in the room while you shower. But clear is less expensive and made the small space seem larger. That's what we ultimately went with, and I'm glad because when you're actually in the shower, it feels much more open. Clear. We have a squeegee and clean it after every use. I kind of enjoy cleaning it. I take great pride in getting all the water off.

i don't care about the privacy thing. i look great! ;) haha

but i do think opaque would look cleaner more often.

I like a curtain, it is easy to keep clean because you can replace it! We removed the shower door in my house and it made a big difference in the bathroom! Curtains are just another way to decorate the bathroom. Now no one sees the 20 shampoo bottles and 3 bars of soap I have in the shower.

Clear glass showers scream porn set, and the opaque is like showering inside a box.

We chose opaque because we have a sizeable bathroom, so it doesn't reduce the size of the room and I didn't want the hassle of squeedgeeing every time I showered. Each to their own! :)

Clear! I want to feel relaxed and comfortable in the shower, not like I'm hiding in a closet. No "porn set" thoughts ever come to mind...

A quick wipe with a microfiber towel after each use is a lot easier than a squeegy, and actually does a better job. It takes 10 seconds, and my doors never look dirty.

I've got clear and squeegee daily (I'm on autopilot now and don't even think about it).

I guess I could consider opaque if the shower were clearly visible from the bedroom and there was no bathroom door. My bathroom has no door from the master bedroom, but the shower is behind a wall.

If you go opaque, think about whether it's going to make your bathroom feel smaller since you would be losing the extra visual space that clear glass would afford.

we dont have a shower curtain or a screen... we have a large tub and it's open to the rest of the room looks great and feels fantastic!

The steam from the shower will make it opaque anyways. Personally, I dislike the "greenish" effect on any glass.

Clear but with a blinds or curtain option.

CLEAR! Especially when it's some pitiful shower the size of a phone booth.

Besides preferring any added sense of spaciousness, I always shave in the shower, so I prefer to get as much light coming in as possible. Any opaqueness in the shower door just makes it darker and gloomier in there.

Clear! Wipe it down with RainX (the car window stuff) and it will remain clean and spot free forever.

Despite my most obsessive efforts with a squeegee, my clear shower doors got horrible hard water deposits that nothing would remove, and my landlord kindly replaced them with frosted ones so any future buildup wouldn't show.

Clear. Then RainX, squeegies, and scrubbing bubbles do the trick.

Shower curtain for me too -- doors are a pain to replace (as they all must be eventually), whereas curtains are cheap, easy to change, and as others have said, they're another great/fun way to decorate.

I don't have a shower cabin - I use over the bathtub and prefer curtain - not a clear one. I actually like to close up the curtains even when I bath... it adds calmness and intimacy. I wouldn't want a clear glass/curtain even though I live alone and there is no problem of somebody seeing me.

That opaque one seems awfully... opaque. Isn't there something in between these two options?

I think the sandblasted look is starting to look dated. Especially when it's really green.

Those pictures are unfair. The clear looks heavenly, and the "opaque" looks like a closet that I would be almost afraid to open.

But even without the pictures I would prefer clear.

What about the clear glass that goes opaque at the flick of a switch.
