Looks like the tiles we've been loving recently here and here have something in common. Like they're made by the same company (who knew?). We're sort of bowled over by how beautiful they all are. Check out where they're from and where to find them here:

Yes, the tiles at Intelligentsia and the tiles at Susina are both made by Granada Tiles.
Not only is their entire collection beautiful, but the company strives to be as sustainable as they can be. Their tiles, rather than being fired are made by first pouring a mixture of cement and color pigment into separate compartments in a metal mold (a sort of oversized cookie cutter) and then adding concrete and pressing the tile under lots of pressure. The upside down cake is left to cure in the sun, and ends in a really durable tile.
Gosh, we just think they're lovely and our favorite must be the Estrella Tile in the kitchen shot.
Gorgeous.
Anyone venture to guess what these tiles may cost? Range? Ballpark?
I'm guessing it's an "if you have to ask..." situation.

the tiles themselves are known as encaustic concrete or cement tiles. just use a search engine to look that up and you will see hundreds of designs/colours and a wide array of prices. they are dead cheap to produce, so you might be able to find a company with a smaller mark up.

My family has a house near Mexico City and it's filled with awesome tile. Some of it is very baroque like the patterns above and the other designs are more simple and modern-ish. I wish there was an easy way to being them into the US, the prices are much more affordable down there.

Check out the cement tiles at Emery et Cie -- they are amazing, with a huge selection of colours. The best thing though, is that they offer a patchwork assortment, which is what Ilse Crawford used in this project:

There is also a cement tile information resource that explains the history and lists places where they are manufactured. Great site.

We have a tile company in town who goes to Mexico periodically and buys these tiles from a factory that has been making them forever.

Hi all,
Yes, they may seem expensive, but there is a HUGE amount of quality variation in cement tiles. There are many shortcuts that manufacturers can take - increasing the ratio of sand to cement, for example - that aren't visible at first blush but make a big difference in the way the tiles look and wear.
Granada Tiles' production facilities in Nicaragua are run by our nephew who is an exacting engineer. We adhere to the highest standards of worker safety and environmental protection. All of this is part of producing a superior, beautiful and lasting tile. It may cost a bit more up front but it will last longer than all of us.
