The Keychain Toolbox: Utili-Key 6-in-1 Tool

071208utili-key.jpgFor a long while we used to carry a small Swiss Army Knife on our keychain; we can't count the many times it came to the rescue in and out of the house. But thanks to heightened security everywhere, we've long taken off our tool box on the go. We're not sure this would go over well with airline security, but on an everyday basis (the fact that it looks like a key but isn't one makes it suspicious), the Utili-Key is a brilliant utility solution to carry around for any tool time activities...

The stainless steel 6-in-1 Tool tool opens up offering a semi-serrated knife blade, a micro flat and a Phillips head screwdriver, an eyeglass screwdriver and a bottle opener so you can celebrate with a drink after all the hard work you've done around the house. Available from ThinkGeek for $9.99.

Ha, i talked about these on my blog a while back, and ordered myself one as a Christmas present. My impression is that its just a so so tool. The bottle opener is mostly useless, as it requires the thing to be in the open position to use, and so holding the thing and not cutting yourself becomes a struggle. The rest of the tools work ok, though none of them are long enough to be terribly useful.

Just my 2 cents.

I loved having this knife (tool)on my key chain, always came in handy. The only problem is it keeps breaking on me.

This would be good for opening or flattening cardboard boxes, since I usually use my keys for that anyway.

I agree with Jose A - it's a so so product.

It's tricky (hard) to open without cutting yourself so you'll need to practice a bit.

I've taken it through airport security without any problems.

Overall it's not a bad addition to your key chain and comes in handy when you're in a desperate situation. My desperate situations usually involve cutting off a clothing tag.

I bought one of these a while back during a brief stint working at a Restoration Hardware. I've kept it on my keychain ever since and don't know what I'd do without it. I'm a knitter who takes her knitting everywhere with her, and I find the knife to come in handy so often for cutting the yarn when I'm out and about. No need to try to snap the yarn and make a mess of my project.

I will agree that it's a bit hard to open, and is breakable. Last winter I dropped my keys coming out of the house, and it snapped in two! Luckily, Restoration Hardware has a great return policy and I just exchanged it for a brand new one.

I've also taken this through airport security countless times without a second thought- it truly does look like just another key.
