Escapes: Roadtripping Resources

atla-080108-roadtrip01.jpgWhen I moved to Los Angeles from New York, I drove cross-country with a friend. We took secondary roads and combined it with sightseeing, visiting as many oddities as we could. It was an amazing experience and something we've always thought about doing again. If you're considering your own road trip this summer, here are some resources we wish we'd had at our disposal...

  • If you're considering blogging your trip or just want to make sure you have some decent pictures of those once in a lifetime experiences, check out PhotoJojo's Ultimate Guide to Road Trip Photography.
  • We had a book of odd museums across the US when we road-tripped. Find it all online at Roadside America from the biggest ball of twine to Carhenge, a replica of Stonehenge made entirely of cars.
  • Road Trip America helps you with the practical side of car travel from estimating gas costs and distances to ideas on traveling solo or with pets.
  • Road Trip USA takes you on classic road trips from the Appalachian Trail to Route 66 to the Pacific Coast Highway

Jane and Michael Stern's "Road Food" would be great to take on a cross-country trip, esp if you are taking secondary roads. I think there is a website, but I haven't found it very useful. Would be worth getting the book for a nice long road trip.

My parents just started out on a three-week cross country trip on friday! I bet my mom had some of these links already but I'll send them along for when she can "borrow" some wireless internet along the way.

I second the "Road Food" recommendation - I did a LOT of road tripping when I was in college and it was an invaluable resource. In fact, some of my most fond memories of the trips were made possible by the book. Even if I'm not driving somewhere, I'll consult it before going on a trip to a new city.
