LA Getaway: Twin Palms in Palm Springs

072108twinpalms00.jpgATLA reader, Lauren, sent us a photo postcard journal of her envious getaway stay at the old digs of the Chairman of the Board himself in Palm Springs:

In May, a friend invited me down to Palm Springs to stay at Frank Sinatra's old house. You better believe that I was down there faster than you can say "martini". There were 6 of us friends that all stayed the weekend. The house was so wonderful, that I think we only left once, for more provisions. Every room was impeccably decorated (check out my room, that made me feel like a slightly drunk Tarzan!) and gorgeous.
I'm saving every penny to go back!

Designed in 1947 by Stewart Williams for Frank Sinatra and his first wife, Nancy Barbato, Twin Palms is a spectacular example of mid-century contemporary architecture in the heart of Palm Springs’ Movie Colony community. Located just around the corner from residences once owned by Al Jolson, Jack Benny and Cary Grant, this estate boasts both luxury and historical significance.

If these walls could talk… indeed, the 4,500 square foot home was host to some of the valley’s most glamorous parties with Hollywood’s brightest stars, including Bob Hope, Joan Crawford, Phil Silvers, Mary Livingston, George Burns, Gracie Allen, and even the reclusive Greta Garbo. The home was also witness to some of Sinatra’s most memorable bouts. One of the most outrageous was when Frank threw then-wife Ava Gardner’s possessions onto the driveway after she appeared at the house in an attempt to catch him with Lana Turner. You can still see the chip in the sink where Frank through a bottle in a rage.

Highlights Include:
• Three bedrooms plus Sleeper Sofa
• Seven Baths
• Media room with sofa bed, which can double as bedroom
• Sinatra’s original state-of-the-art sound system still in place, although not connected for use
• Massive sliding glass doors open onto expansive patio, incorporating cabana and piano-shaped swimming pool
• Furnishings exact to the period, including pieces designed by Knoll, Vladimir Kagan, T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings, and Paul Laszlo spread throughout the estate among important works of art, pottery, and textiles
