Reader Escapes: Melanie's Heartland Vacation

Location: Cincinnati, Ohio
Description: My last vacation was a week spent in Cincinnati, Ohio just this past May. My mother was born there, and we still have quite a bit of family there. It is one of my favorite cities in America, and part of my heart will always reside there (whenever I visit, I feel as though I've come home). It really is the heartland, and a true American boomtown full of absolutely gorgeous nineteenth-century German architecture that always captures my rapt attention. Cincinnati is also home to some of the nicest people you'll meet anywhere, and the food is incredible at just about any restaurant....

081408escapes-mel01.jpg081408escapes-mel03.jpgAs always, we had to stop at Skyline Chili in Clifton (a beautiful old gas-lit neighborhood that is home to my family) for Chili Five Ways, but a standout this trip was Daybreak at Hyde Park, a warm, cozy breakfast, brunch and lunch place with gorgeous, tasty food and fantastic staff.

081408escapes-mel02.jpgWe did a lot of shopping downtown, got ice cream at Graeter's, and were covered in butterflies at the International Butterfly Show at Krohn Conservatory in Eden Park. I can't wait to go back next summer.

mmm... skyline and graeters. I've actually had my brother send me canned skyline -- not quite the same, but still really good. I might just have order some banana ice cream online - sooooo good!

Graeter's is awesome! My family is from Cincy too and my cousin sends a bunch of Graeter's to us each year at Christmas. Heaven. Heaven. Heaven.

Home! I'm not a fan of Skyline but I love Graeters and Larosas. My office was on fountain sqare and I could look out the window at all of the people enjoying beautiful sunny days during summer and the ice skating rink during winter. My family is still there and I miss it more every time I leave. Thank you for speaking so highly of the city. Most people find it stuffy and unforgiving.

Melanie, thank you so much for your kind words from a visitor's perspective. Sometimes Cincinnatians take their city for granted, but there are many wonderful things about our city. Thank you for pointing out a few of them!

That70'sHeidi: I see a headless camel sprinting. I kid. I believe the logo was just derived from an abstract mid-cent/mod aesthetic shape. It's whatever you want it to be...just like your home.
