Although I'm from New York, I've never been to the top of the Empire State Building. And now, living in Los Angeles, it wasn't until friends came to visit me that I took the Universal Studio Tour or went to Disneyland. Many of us have never visited the sites that draw out of town visitors. If travel plans this summer have you stumped, why not be a tourist in your own city? I just finished reading "Fugitives and Refugees," a sort of travel guide for Portland, Oregon. Even as a native, I found several places I'd never even heard of. Fortunately, there's still some summer left to get out exploring.

I don't know how many shows are taping at this time of year, but you can try and go be an audience member at a sitcom! It was actually pretty fun, they had popsicles and a comedian (not very funny) and the chance to win prizes and autographs, and you get to watch the show. For free. I think you go through Audiences Unlimited. It's a bit of a long night though, you have to get there early for a line (if it's a popular show) and sometimes they do multiple takes of a scene, but how many other people in the world can say they were at THAT TAPING when the show airs on TV?
